If you want to know where to go for cocktails, who better to ask than the barmen themselves?

Alongside top London cocktail bars, the Top 50 Cocktail Bars list – compiled by top50cocktailbars.com – is brimming with North East and Yorkshire gems. Here are the ones worth heading to.

Vice & Virtue, Leeds
Number 9 on the list
This restaurant-cum-cocktail bar has something for everyone to sup. Their second floor is dedicated to restaurant Virtue, but you’re going to want to head to Vice on floor one for a drinks menu that covers every spirit and almost every style of cocktail.

Jake’s Bar, Leeds
Number 15 on the list
Approaching its 15th birthday, Jake’s Bar and Still Room create, as you’d expect, amazing cocktails while also having the perfect party atmosphere. Growing their own ingredients to make a sumptuous selection of liqueurs, and bitters, they have pretty much everything the discerning cocktail drinker will ever need in the city.

Evil Eye, York
Number 20 on the list
Home of the bizarre, weird and wonderful, Evil Eye is an escape from the busy historic city of York – with amazing cocktails, of course. It might be hidden behind a specialist gin shop, but it’s well worth hunting down for their board game-inspired menu.

Jalou, Newcastle
Number 31 on the list
This premier late-night cocktail bar may be one of Newcastle’s party destinations, but its cocktail credentials stack up. They might not blow your head off with a classic Old Fashioned, but they will with their whacky creations, like the Bee-Younce – made with honey, apple liquor and finished with a dusting of activated charcoal.

The Nuthatch, Middlesbrough
Number 36 on the list
Middlesbrough is known as the home of the parmo, but now they have another speciality to add to their list. The Nuthatch is bringing the masses of Teeside a sophisticated destination for the discerning drinker. Their well-thought-out cocktails include almost every spirit, and you’ll find their innovative inventions just as delicious as the more traditional tipples on offer.

Below the Stairs, Leeds
Number 39 on the list
There’s something to love about a family-owned bar. Not only do they make imaginative cocktails – using seaweed gin and East Indian Sherry, for example – they have all the humour and edginess you’d expect from an independent Leeds-based venue.

Public Bar, Sheffield
Number 42 on the list
Representing South Yorkshire, Public Bar fuses hipster style with high-quality cocktails. While it’s not exactly a speakeasy, ironically, don’t expect to find too much about Public online – this one’s for the curious. Pay them a visit to sample their white chocolate Tanqueray and rosewater creation, or an in-house spin on a classic Bellini – which uses Public’s homemade puree.
