Locally-run cinemas need your help

Luckily, Yorkshire has some truly brilliant ones well worth supporting. Here are our favourites.

SHOWROOM CINEMA

Sheffield’s independent cinema at Showroom Workstation shows handpicked films and events. Get competitive with the  Showroom Pub Quiz on 27th May. Plus, there’ll be a special immersive screening of the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show in support of LGBTQ+ youth charity, SAYiT!, on 24th May.

THE PALACE CINEMA

This family-owned and -run cinema shows the latest film releases but also hosts a variety of events including live theatre, opera, ballet and concerts. The cinema dates back to the 19th century and retains its charming Art Deco character. As well as musicals and ballets in May, visitors can look forward to Billy Elliot The Musical and Les Misérables: The Staged Concert at the start of June.

ILKLEY CINEMA

Theatre, opera, dance, music, sport – Ilkley Cinema shows it all. Sofas and single seats with tables for snacks and drinks means viewers are always comfortable at this award-winning independent cinema and there’s a state-of-the-art laser projector and high-tech surround sound system. The cinema also provides special screenings for everyone from babies to the over 60s. Visitors throughout May will be transported to the theatre with showings of Bonnie & Clyde: The Musical and performances by the Royal Ballet & Opera.

PICTUREVILLE CINEMA

Yorkshire’s biggest independent cinema shows new releases, arthouse films and family favourites across its immersive screens. As well as the Pictureville screen, there’s the IMAX and Cubby Broccoli screens here too. From 30th May a new season will celebrate young northern identity in cinema (curated by the Bradford-born, raised and based director of Sex Education, Skins and Shameless), and from 19th–25th June Invisible Women will present a season of coming of age films by women filmmakers, inspired by Bradford’s diasporic past.

JUNCTION GOOLE

Goole’s multi-award winning centre for the arts opened in 2009 and is home to its own theatre as well as a cinema. As part of their ‘Imagine’ season this spring, children can enjoy screenings of their favourite movies, as well as themed activities throughout their visit. June's screenings include Lollipop, A Streetcar Names Desire and Ocean With David Attenborough.

THE STATION CINEMA

The Station Cinema opened in 2007 when Richmond’s former Victorian railway station was redeveloped into a hub for food, film and art. Visitors head to this indie cinema for independent and international cinema, and it also hosts charitable screenings, film festivals and creative workshops. Throughout May and June, don't miss the live-action remake of Lily & Stitch and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.

HEBDEN BRIDGE PICTURE HOUSE

This single-screen independent cinema was built in 1921 and today it’s a cultural hub celebrating cinema and filmmaking where visitors can enjoy the latest blockbusters, independent films, live broadcasts, and classics year round. The Picture House is also the first Cinema of Sanctuary and has a diverse programme so everyone has the opportunity to experience film in a friendly and social setting.

KEIGHLEY PICTURE HOUSE CINEMA

Independent cinema Keighley Picture House opened in 1913, shows the latest releases, and has family matinées at weekends and daily during school holidays. They also have autism-friendly screenings on the last Saturday of every month. Catch Oscar-nominated filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis on 26th May. May and June's screenings include Lily & Stitch, A Streetcar Named Desire, Dog Man and A Minecraft Movie.

HYDE PARK PICTURE HOUSE

When it first opened its doors in 1914 the picture house screened newsreels and films to keep people informed and boost morale during the war. Now one of the UK’s oldest cinemas, and having undergone a revamp, Leeds’s Hyde Park Picture House screens new and independent films as well as classics and documentaries. The cinema is also host to Leeds Filmmaker Network this May to connect aspiring filmmakers. Alongside new film releases, on 31st May the cinema will screen the Doctor Who finale, and on 6th June, you can join Peppa Pig and her family for another unique cinema experience as they get ready for their biggest adventure yet – welcoming Mummy Pig's new baby.

PLAZA SKIPTON

A traditional cinema showing modern films, the small and welcoming Plaza Skipton is the sole survivor of four cinemas that once existed in the town, and has circle seating and stalls with Pullman seats. Watch all-new Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning from today and throughout June.

RITZ CINEMA

One of the oldest continuously-run cinemas in the UK, Ritz Cinema first opened to the public in 1912. Since 1995 it has been run by volunteers and whilst it’s dedicated to bringing both blockbusters and independent films to locals, it’s also appeared on screen a few times itself including the opening scenes of the remake of All Creatures Great and Small in 2021 and in the 2019 release The Runaways. From 30th May see Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs in The Salt Path.

THE OAKWOOD CINEMA

Run by a group of volunteers, The Oakwood Cinema is an organisation aiming to provide an independent local cinema for the residents of Oakwood and Roundhay in Leeds and shows a mixture of mainstream and community-focused films. On 21st June, watch A Compete Unknown – a biographical musical about Bob Dylan.

The oldest and only independently owned cinema in Leeds, Cottage Road Cinema has been showing films since 1912. As well as new releases and family favourites, this cinema also has regular classic film nights. Classics this month include One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

WETHERBY CINEMA

Wetherby Cinema has been sharing stories since 1915, but the building has been restored so today’s film lovers enjoy a modern cinematic experience here. Wine coolers and built-in tables mean they have everything they need to enjoy their favourite films in comfort. Watch Six The Musical on 29th May and the theatrical screening of A Streetcar Named Desire throughout June.
