During a visit to the Glamping Show at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire, Jill and her family were inspired by conversations around the rise of luxury outdoor stays. That’s where the idea for a treehouse was born – something unique to Northumberland, combining indulgence with rustic charm and home-from-home comforts.
From the outset, the vision was to use reclaimed, local and natural materials wherever possible, minimising environmental impact and creating spaces that blended effortlessly with the landscape. After two years of planning and securing permissions, construction began in September 2018 to bring the first project, The Treehouse, to life, and it welcomed its first guests in November 2019.
At the heart of every stay at Woodland Chase is an invitation to slow down and fully immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. Each cabin has been thoughtfully designed to encourage guests outdoors, whether it’s sinking into a private hot tub beneath the canopy of the trees or gathering around a crackling fire pit with a hot chocolate as the sun dips below the horizon. Private decking areas offer front row seats to Northumberland’s famously clear night skies – perfect for stargazing, with the blankets and binoculars provided. Each cabin is crafted from natural wood, seamlessly blending rustic warmth with refined luxury, a harmonious balance that celebrates the outdoors while offering a cosy sanctuary to return to. With every detail considered, Woodland Chase truly is a place to retreat, relax and recharge.
The next two cabins, built by a talented local craftsman who shared the Campbell family’s vision, opened in July 2020, shortly after the first Covid lockdown. They offered a restorative rural escape at a time when nature, space and peace felt more precious than ever.
In 2022, The Fieldhouse Spa Cabin joined the collection, created to maximise the sweeping countryside views and provide a serene wellness retreat. This hideaway features a sauna, outdoor shower and even a restored butter churn repurposed as a cold dunk bucket: the perfect finishing touches for those seeking relaxation, slow mornings and gentle sanctuary in the heart of nature.
Looking back over the past seven years, Jill and her family feel incredibly proud of how their vision has flourished. ‘We’ve loved watching guests enjoy the spaces we’ve created, many of whom return time and again,’ Jill says. ‘It’s a privilege to have been part of so many special moments, from proposals and honeymoons to baby-moons, birthdays and anniversaries.’
The Woodland Chase team continues to evolve the experience, always looking for meaningful ways to enhance both the site and the guest journey. Hundreds of trees have already been planted, and work is underway to develop a flourishing wildflower meadow to support biodiversity. The family also champions local suppliers, partnering with artisan makers to offer thoughtful touches from handmade toiletries to generous welcome hampers showcasing the best of the region.
