Discover the New Bailiffgate Hotel in Alnwick

The new Bailiffgate Hotel offers timeless luxury in the heart of Alnwick

Having opened its doors at the end of May, this five-star-standard luxury retreat blends the grandeur of Alnwick’s Georgian architecture with the comforts of contemporary living. Formerly the Duke of Northumberland’s Commissioner’s House, and later the Duchess’s School, the building has been lovingly restored and thoughtfully extended to offer 48 individually-styled rooms, including 14 indulgent suites.
From the sun-drenched Castle View Doubles to the lavish Grand Commissioner Suite, every room combines style and comfort, with nods to local heritage and sweeping views of either Alnwick Castle or the surrounding countryside. Families, couples, and solo travellers alike will find a space to unwind – and dogs are more than welcome, too.

General Manager Bernard Bloodworth, himself a former Duchess’s School pupil, calls the hotel’s opening a full-circle moment. ‘This building has always held stories – from commissioners to schoolchildren – and now it tells a new one: of quiet luxury, local pride, and a true sense of place.’
Bernard says the vision for the project has always been about blending heritage and elegance with a warm, personal experience.
‘This is a building with history and character, and we’ve tried to reflect that in every detail – from the colour palette and textures to the service we offer. We want every guest who steps through the door to feel instantly at home, but also like they’re experiencing something timeless.
‘We wanted to create a place that not only respects the fabric of the building, but also celebrates everything that’s special about this area,’ he continues. ‘We’ve had so many conversations with residents and visitors alike who share our excitement about bringing something truly special to the town.’
While the hotel’s design and decor are rooted in elegance, comfort and quality remain the guiding principles. Thoughtfully curated furnishings, luxurious linens, and bespoke touches are found throughout the bedrooms, while the communal spaces invite guests to relax and enjoy their surroundings – glass or teacup in hand.

Beyond the countless charms of Bailiffgate’s accommodation, the hotel offers a delicious haven for food lovers. Its flagship restaurant, Motte & Bailey, is led by Executive Head Chef Paul Blakey, whose 30-year career has seen him achieve two AA Rosettes at prestigious kitchens including Doxford Hall, Linden Hall, and Matfen Hall.
Paul’s menus celebrate the region’s best produce – think Craster kipper hash, seared black bream with beetroot purée, and a signature lamb rack with shoulder curry and cumin-spiced gratin. Vegan guests are equally well catered for, with a full plant-based menu that never skimps on creativity.
‘My cooking is led by flavour and seasonality. I like to create food that’s refined but approachable and generous,’ Paul says. ‘Northumberland has an incredible natural larder, from the coast to the hills, and I love showcasing that through simple, well-executed dishes.’
From hearty Northumbrian breakfasts and leisurely lunches to some of the area’s finest afternoon teas served in the light-filled Garden Room, Bailiffgate Hotel’s food offering is a celebration of comfort and craft. For anyone looking to raise a glass, the Commissioner’s Bar is a warm, inviting space to sit back with a local spirit, glass of wine, or bespoke cocktail.
Meanwhile, for private gatherings, the elegant Mrs Bowmaker’s Room offers an intimate setting for up to 10 guests – perfect for special occasions or corporate dining.

Guests seeking a peaceful and luxurious base for exploring Northumberland – or simply a refined place to unwind – will find a delightful setting at Bailiffgate Hotel. And with Alnwick’s celebrated attractions on its doorstep, it’s ideally placed for those looking to soak up the town’s rich culture and heritage.
From the cinematic splendour of Alnwick Castle and the contemporary creativity of The Alnwick Garden and Lilidorei to the cosy charm of the much-loved Barter Books, the hotel sits within easy reach of some of the county’s most distinctive destinations.

‘This is more than a hotel – it’s an experience,’ says Bernard. ‘We want every guest to feel like they’ve discovered a hidden gem, rich in stories and full of comfort.’
Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a special celebration, or simply want to indulge in top-tier Northumbrian hospitality, the Bailiffgate Hotel is a stylish new addition to Alnwick’s thriving cultural and tourism scene.
