Where the Lake District gets under your skin…

Some places just stay with you. At The Yan at Broadrayne, it's the clink of cutlery in the bistro, the smell of rain on the fells, and the sound of laughter drifting through the old farmyard. Tucked above Grasmere, this family-run hideaway is where comfort, character and Cumbrian charm come together. Step inside, settle in, and you'll soon see why so many guests never want to leave.

It’s one of those places that makes you breathe out the moment you arrive. Shoulders drop, phone signal fades, and suddenly all you can think about is what’s for tea. Perched on the fellside in what was once a Herdwick sheep farm, The Yan is a boutique bistro with rooms that feels like a warm hug after a long walk. Relaxed, full of character and proud of its roots, it’s the kind of spot where muddy boots are welcome, laughter’s encouraged, and the food’s every bit as comforting as the company.

If you’re staying over (and you really should), there’s something for everyone. The boutique rooms are stylish but homely, with huge beds, soft linens and mountain views that’ll make you linger over your morning brew. The luxury glamping cabins are perfect for those who love the idea of sleeping under the stars with a powerful rain shower and a kettle close at hand, of course. And for families or groups, the farmhouse cottages are spot-on: spacious, cosy and made for board games by the fire or lazy breakfasts before a day on the fells. However you stay, you’ll get the same Yan welcome… relaxed, genuine and full of northern character.

Bistro at The Yan

Step out the door and you’re straight onto some of the best walking trails in the Lake District. Helm Crag, Easedale Tarn and even Helvellyn are all within easy reach (or a well-aimed hiking pole). Fancy a wander further afield? Hop on the local bus to Ambleside, Keswick or Windermere for a day of exploring, swimming or holing up in a pub when the heavens inevitably open. Rain or shine, the Lakes have a way of getting under your skin and it’s even better when you know there’s a hearty meal waiting at the end of it.

The bistro is the beating heart of The Yan, and there’s something a little magical about it. The menu changes with the seasons but always leans towards the hearty side, those comforting, nostalgic, full-flavoured dishes that taste even better after a day outdoors. Expect slow-cooked meats, buttery mash, sticky puds and sauces that don’t mess about. Old favourites sit alongside family recipes and clever twists, all made with the best local ingredients the team can get their hands on. It’s food that feels like a hug, served with a grin and a bit of banter.

The wine list might be short, but it’s mighty, a handpicked selection chosen for flavour and fun, no fluff or filler. Every bottle feels like it’s been picked by someone who genuinely enjoys a good drop, not just ticks boxes on a supplier sheet.

This is the sort of place where you end the day full, happy and glowing from the inside out, part good food, part fresh air, part that easy feeling of being somewhere that just fits. A true family business through and through, The Yan is born from a love of good food, great company and the wild beauty of the Grasmere valley.

It isn’t fancy, and that’s exactly the point. The Yan is honest, unpretentious and full of heart. A place that captures everything that’s great about the Lake District without ever trying too hard.

Because really, what more do you need than good grub, great company and the fells on your doorstep?
