Get out and about with our guide to the best things to do this month

We've rounded up must-not-miss events and activities this October, including some spooktacular trails, immersive installations and your first taste of Christmas with Living North's Christmas Fair.
Luxmuralis returns to Durham Cathedral

Give it your best…

Start the month with a bang with the International Apple Throwing Championships at Newby Hall. At the start of British Apple Month, on 1st October, this is a hotly-contested competition where whoever throws an apple the furthest over the River Ure wins the prestigious title and trophy! There will also be apple pressing demonstrations, cider tasting, a display of the many apple varieties grown in the orchards and advice on all things fruity from the experts at the Northern Fruit Group.

Make up your own mind…

In a shockingly shameless scam, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was duped out of £1,000,000… Or was it? From 4th–7th October, Quiz, The Coughing Major Millionaire Scandal, is coming to Newcastle Theatre Royal. Rory Bremner stars as Chris Tarrant in this thrilling and entertaining ride through the infamous scandal which engulfed the world’s most popular TV quiz show. Now uncovering new evidence, it’s time to ask you, the audience, to put fingers on keypads and answer the ultimate 50/50: guilty or not guilty?

See the light…

Luxmuralis returns to Durham Cathedral with a new show from the 11th– 15th October. Science is a light and sound art installation which will take visitors on an exploration through elements, molecules, DNA, and the minds of the greatest scientists in history. Dazzling projections on Durham Cathedral's centuries-old architecture will allow you to delve into chemistry and biology, exploring the history of science and how it has contributed to humanity and our understanding of the world, while music will fill the cathedral to invigorate the senses.

Starting with the Kielder 10K and Kielder Run Bike Run on Saturday, followed by the Kielder Half Marathon and Junior races on Sunday, it all adds up to an electric atmosphere and a fabulous weekend. Britain’s Most Beautiful Marathon is the finalé to the weekend of events and the route follows an almost entirely off-road course around northern Europe’s largest man-made lake, Kielder Water.

Drink up…

The most important date of Germany's cultural calendar arrives in Beverley for the very first time this month. Taking place inside what is set to be one of Europe’s largest bier tents, from 20th–21st October, Oktoberfest is coming to Beverley Racecourse. The Bavarian-style festival will include a showcase of some of the best authentic oompah bands from around the world, plus a large selection of traditional German foods and those all-important steins. With three sessions of live music, plenty of German beer and a selection of delicious bratwurst and pretzels, what more could you want? Prost!
