The New Foodie Openings to Try in April
These are the new spots Living North is loving this month
Adam’s Bakehouse
Adam’s Bakehouse has recently announced its third venue, on Beverley Terrace in Cullercoats. This new gem by the sea serves up all the staples Adam’s is already known for including fresh loaves, croissants and experimental bakes. With three locations opened in less than two years, we’re excited to see Adam’s continue its takeover of the North East.

Acaiety
Acaiety in Jesmond is the new açai café to try on Acorn Road. Inside you’ll find an ultra-modern, minimalist space which blends unique, vintage finds from The Hideaway Store with a menu of healthy açai options and breakfast staples. Build your bowl however you like, with a choice of toppings ranging from chopped dates and almond drizzle to mango, kiwi and peanut butter.

Aperture
Aperture Alehouse in North Shields is the new bar and bottle shop LN are loving. Inside, vintage meets modern and guests can expect to find a great range of local spirits, natural wines and craft beers in cosy surroundings. They even have a great selection of non-alcoholic options.
63–65 West Percy Street, North Shields NE29 0DS
Pho 179
Pho 179, which already has a location in Sunderland, has recently opened a new spot at the top of Newcastle’s Pilgrim Street, joining the city’s growing number of Vietnamese eateries. The menu offers a mixed selection of rice and noodle dishes, as well as classic pho options and spring rolls.
14 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle NE1 6QG
North Slice
From the team behind Hoxton North, North Slice is Harrogate’s vibey new pizzeria which blends influences from Naples, London and New York. Expect a relaxed atmosphere, excellent pizza (with a blend of classic and contemporary toppings), and plenty of cocktails. To finish, they have a streamlined menu of gelato – the ricotta and fig is a must try.
57 Cold Bath Road, Harrogate HG2 0PU
Zibby’s
Based on the motto ‘no sad sandwiches,’ Zibby’s is York’s cheery new sandwich shop on Monkgate, and they take joy in creating exceptional sandwiches. Think burrata caprese (using an entire burrata), freshly made tuna crunch, or beef with gravy mayo and lashings of horseradish. They’re also serving up hot, breakfast-stacked sandwiches, and great coffee to take away.

Saltas
The team at Coin in Hebden Bridge have recently extended their offering with the opening of Saltas, a deli specialising in New York-style subs stacked high with fillings, and there’s something to suit everyone – think prosciutto, burrata and honey, turkey and Emmental layered over pickles, or breaded chicken with Napoli sauce and a generous amount of Mortadella.
12 Albert Street, Hebden Bridge HX7 8AH
Still
Still has recently relocated to Beverley’s North Bar Within from Hull and has set up shop offering speciality roasted in-house coffee, natural wine and cocktails, and a selection of fresh seasonal flowers.

Very Yummy
Make a trip to Yummy Yorkshire this spring for carefully-crafted dishes in the rustic charm of Hide & Hoof restaurant for breakfast or lunch, or enjoy something special with one of their wonderful afternoon teas. Of course, no trip would be complete without a scoop of their award-winning artisan ice cream. With 18 flavours to choose from, The Parlour also serves fresh coffee, cake, waffles and sundaes, and from 5th April, their Market on the Farm season begins, welcoming local makers to their barn every other Sunday throughout the year. yummyyorkshire.co.uk
Top Table
One of Harrogate’s top tables, Rhubarb has been an LN favourite since it opened two years ago, and continues to be our go-to spot for refined dining in the town. Head chef Varun Khanna has created a menu which emphasises traditional British flavours and contemporary techniques. Tuck into the likes of sea bream crudo tartlet, cured venison ham with a savoury cheese ice cream, and crab curry from the à la carte menu, or go all out with a tasting menu (available at lunch and dinner) and wine flight. rhubarbharrogate.co.uk
For All Seasons
Welcome spring with dinner at one of Leeds’s top seasonally-led bistros. The Swine Bistro in Headingley has a menu guided by what is fresh and local, with a distinct modern British influence that landed it in The Good Food Guide’s Top 100 Best Local Restaurants and Squaremeal’s Top 100 Restaurants. Stop by for weekday lunch, an excellent roast on Sundays and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday. theswinebistro.co.uk
Nice Ice
We don’t need to wait for warm weather to enjoy an ice cream by the sea, especially when it’s as good as Spurreli’s. An LN favourite, this boutique ice cream parlour and coffee shop in Amble is where you’ll find exceptional ice cream in a mouthwatering array of flavours. Using milk and cream sourced in Northumberland, they regularly update their unique flavours with new seasonal options and as well as ice cream, there are plenty of hot drinks and homemade treats to tuck into. spurreli.com
Proudly Local
Stocking up the pantry with things that are local and delicious is all about knowing where to shop. The Cheese Room at Alnwick Deli on Paikes Street is a fantastic spot which offers an excellent range of local cheeses, chutneys and pickles. Planning a charcuterie night? The knowledgeable team are on hand to help with your selection, and there’s plenty of fresh locally-made bread, beer, wine and sauces to shop too. @alnwickcheeseroom
