Everyone’s favourite Yorkshire chef Tommy Banks is heading to Sunderland for the 2025/26 football season, and he’s bringing with him a new premium à la carte match day experience at the Stadium of Light. Banks on the Wear will offer an exceptional Michelin-worthy dining experience prepared by Tommy alongside unparalleled views of the River Wear and city skyline.
Café Society
In Sunderland, Mogi Café is a new speciality bakery-cum-coffee shop offering a blend of Greek pastries, savoury bites and salads. Popping up on Chester Road, it’s open daily until 4pm (closed Sundays).
Take the Cake
Adam’s Bakehouse, the ever-popular spot in Bedlington, has recently opened its second venue in Morpeth. Offering a mouthwatering mix of fresh pastries, sandwiches and bread, we recommend trying their new matcha, white chocolate and raspberry swirls – you won’t regret it.



Sweet Spot
Barnard Castle has recently welcomed a new Ukrainian bakery, Creme de la Crust, to Horse Market. Mouthwateringly moist and totally moreish, think layered honey cake, freshly-made poppy buns, delicate pastries and sandwiches.
Sipping by the Sea
A brand new bottle shop and wine bar is getting ready to launch in Whitley Bay. Details about District are being kept under wraps for now, but keep your eyes peeled for what is sure to be a great addition to the town’s growing food and drink scene.
Viva Mexico
Beloved contemporary Mexican pop-up Cantina has finally put down solid roots with the recent opening of its permanent spot in Heaton. Laidback, lively and absolutely delicious, the menu here is plant-based and everything is made to order.

New Digs
From 1st August, renowned three AA Rosette-awarded restaurant Pignut in Helmsley will be taking over The Hare in Scawton, a stunning 12th century inn in the heart of the North York Moors. Pignut will be relocating to the site which will be reimagined as Pignut & The Hare.
Turn up the Heat
It’s been announced that award-winning Dishoom, the wildly popular authentic Indian restaurant, is set to open its first ever Yorkshire venue in Leeds. Celebrating the heady flavours and smells of Bombay, every Dishoom restaurant is wonderfully relaxed, vibrant and has a mouth-watering menu to choose from.

Bringing the vibrancy of Thai cuisine to the UK, Giggling Squid will soon be opening the doors of its new restaurant in York. With bold flavours and plentiful dishes, find all your favourite classic dishes and some new ones besides, surrounded by elegant interiors.

This summer we’re all set to see the opening of Calluna, Saltmoore’s fabulous fine dining restaurant. Joining the retreat’s delightful collection of culinary spaces (including the brasserie, the terrace and the wellness café) Calluna will offer dishes inspired by the seasons and local landscapes.
Comforting Classics
The iconic and award-winning Empire Café in Leeds has a brand new sibling – The Highland Laddie. Self-described as ‘a drinker’s pub with a dining room’ the interior has the rustic charm of a well-kept pub and a menu of hearty classics, as well as more refined options; oysters, homemade sausage rolls, and prawns by the half pint.
