Art for Everyone

At the core of MIMA is its programme of exciting, socially engaged exhibitions that reflect contemporary life and global conversations. This summer, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in powerful new shows that celebrate creativity, identity, and imagination. Whether you're a seasoned art lover or just curious, the exhibitions at MIMA offer something to spark thought and inspiration in everyone. Explore the galleries and let your imagination roam, or get hands-on with the many free resources designed to make art fun, accessible, and engaging for all ages.

A New Way to Enjoy the Outdoors: The MIMA Garden

One of the most exciting additions this summer is the brand-new MIMA Garden – a beautiful outdoor space made for play, discovery, and relaxation. Bring a picnic, soak in the fresh air, and spend time reconnecting with nature. For families, the garden becomes a playful paradise with Adventure Den Kits available from the Welcome Desk. Pick one up and start your own garden adventure by building dens, telling stories, and exploring the great outdoors together. It’s the perfect place to unwind, get creative, and make memories – right in the middle of Middlesbrough.

Free Creative Fun for Families

MIMA is a place where creativity lives in every corner – and it’s especially alive during the school holidays. With a fantastic range of family-friendly activities running throughout July and August, there’s always something new for kids (and grown-ups) to enjoy.

The Family Art Trolley

The Family Art Trolley

We Are Family: Books That Start Conversations

MIMA is passionate about supporting families and young minds through creativity, care, and conversation. As part of the We Are Family initiative, you can browse a wonderful selection of children’s books and poetry that celebrate diverse voices and open up important discussions about identity, belonging, and empathy. These titles are available to purchase from the MIMA Shop or borrow from the We Are Family book box when visiting the Art Trolley.

The MIMA Shop: Thoughtful Gifts & Handmade Treasures

The MIMA Shop is one of Middlesbrough’s best-kept secrets – a treasure trove of carefully selected gifts, handmade crafts and seasonal delights. Whether you're shopping for a special occasion or treating yourself, the shop features work by local artists and makers, stylish homewares, creative toys, books, cards and more.
