What's on
March 2023
Reading time 4 Minutes

Spring is springing and from joining in World Theatre Day to the return of Living North LIVE, there's so much to do this March

Here's just a few of the many things you'll want to do this month.
Dancer from Northern Ballet

See a show...

World Theatre Day takes place in March (the 27th to be exact) so what better way to celebrate than with a trip to your local theatre? See the iconic The Mousetrap at the Grand Opera House in York (6th–11th March), while the smash-hit West End production of Annie returns to Newcastle’s Theatre Royal the same week. For something a bit more family-friendly, Northern Ballet’s hugely popular Ugly Duckling is at Middlesbrough Theatre on the 30th March and it’s a great way to introduce your children to live ballet, music and theatre. For more inspiration head to our What’s On section at livingnorth.com for the most comprehensive guide to all the good things to do near you.

Look up to the sky…

Each year, more and more planets are being discovered, and with new technologies we can analyse their atmospheres in the hunt for signs of life. Throughout March, Kielder Observatory are running their Discovering New Worlds event during which you can discover the technology that makes this possible. The team will guide you through the origins of discovering other worlds and you’ll take a tour of the observatory before getting hands-on with rocks from the origins of our solar system.

Living North LIVE Demo

Go to the fair…

Over three days, Friday 24th–Sunday 26th March, Living North LIVE is back at York Racecourse. It’s Yorkshire’s leading homes, gardens, shopping, food and lifestyle event with live chef demonstrations, workshops, talks and tastings throughout the three days. Click here for all the reasons you need to visit LIVE 2023 – we’re talking inspiring ideas for your home and garden, great gifts, delicious food and unique accessories that you won’t find anywhere else – before taking advantage of our early bird discount on tickets at livingnorth.com to avoid missing out. New for this year, don’t miss getting hands-on in our fabulous workshops throughout the weekend.

Support sport…

There’s so much happening in the sporting world at the moment, from the Sheffield Sharks on the basketball court, to Newcastle Falcons on the rugby pitch. Newcastle United may have missed out on silverware but they’re now focussing on securing a place in the UEFA Champion’s League and with racing at both York and Newcastle racecourses, there is so much sporting action to follow this month. Click here to find out more about all the sport taking place this March.

Cannoli Pie

Eyes on the pies

You could argue that it’s not a coincidence that National Butchers Week and British Pie Week are the same week (6th–12th March this year) but at Living North we love all types of pie, not just the meat variety, and that’s why we have recipes for everything from the most delicious creamy fish pie to a parmigiana pie, as well as even a cannoli pie. Find them all and more at livingnorth.com

Watch on the big screen…

From the 9th–26th March, Tyneside Cinema are running End/Future, a new annual programme exploring the future of civilisation through film, discussion, and technology. Taking place across three long weekends, End/Future is comprised of three distinct programme sections featuring screenings, discussions, and live events, and cinema goers will find out more about how film imagines our collective future. Meanwhile for film lovers in Yorkshire, the Banff Mountain Film Festival tour is at Hebden Bridge Picture House on the 15th.

Don’t forget…

Mother’s Day is on 19th March this year, and it’s the perfect time to show your mum how much she means you. Keep an eye on livingnorth.com in the coming weeks for plenty of Mother’s Day recommendations – from the best restaurants and cafés to treat your mum to the ultimate gift guide, we’ll have all the inspiration you could need. Our first top tip: A subscription to Living North magazine is a fabulous mother’s day present, or take her for a day out to Living North LIVE so she can choose her own gift while she’s there. It’s a win-win!

Be happy…

The 20th March is the International Day of Happiness, so if there is one vital thing to do this month it is to be happy! Whether for you that’s going on a long walk with a pub at the end, booking a short break, staying in with a good book or something totally different, do what makes you and those around you happy this March – we’ve got lots of inspiration at livingnorth.com.
