Reading time 5

This time: relaxed refinement in Raskelf, a bistro at a 13th century inn in Northumberland National Park...

and sharp sophistication at a Victorian Gothic mansion.

If you like: Old world properness
Then try: Tillmouth Park, Cornhill-on-Tweed
This AA Rosette-winning fine dining restaurant gives the kind of dining experience which is becoming rarer and rarer. Pity: the starched linen and wood panelling of the library dining room in this Victorian Gothic mansion complement a menu of refined classics.

If you like: Totally traditional ambience
Then try: Blenkinsopp Castle Inn, Greenhead
This bistro is in a former coaching stable which dates back to the 13th century and is attached to the eponymous castle. Wooden beams, local real ales, roaring fire – it’s an essential part of autumnal day out on the far side of the National Park.

If you like: Relaxed refinement
Then try: Rascills, Raskelf
Newly added to the Good Food Guide after only 10 months since Richard and Lindsay Johns started out here having moved on from Artisan in Hessle, the unpretentious, friendly and traditional vibe here – think slow-roasted pork belly with creamed cabbage and bacon, apple purée and quail Scotch egg – has put it into must-try territory.
