Review: War Horse Rides in to Newcastle Theatre Royal

An aptly-named giant of a theatrical production is currently playing at Newcastle Theatre Royal

This production from the National Theatre is epic in its creative imagination, its simplicity and its glorious storytelling, tracing the journey of a country boy and his much-loved horse, who both find themselves at the First World War’s front line.
The futility of conflict from both sides of the battlefield is amplified throughout the performance. The friendships between fellow men and above all the loving bond of the heroic horse, Joey, and his owner Albert, make this production as compelling as it is moving.
With an ever-changing but brilliant backdrop enhancing the simple stage, the production allows the masterful puppetry to bring horses quite simply, to life. This production is directed by Tom Morris with revival director Katie Henry, and it’s a stunning must-see.
