This spring, Opera North returns to Newcastle Theatre Royal with two contrasting operatic masterpieces - one sparkling with comic intrigue, the other darkly powerful and atmospheric

The Marriage of Figaro (Thursday 19th and Saturday 21st March 2026) is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's irresistible comedy of love, deception and quick-witted scheming. Figaro and Susanna should be preparing for the happiest day of their lives, but their wedding plans are soon thrown into disarray when their employer, Count Almaviva, takes an interest in the bride-to-be. What follows is a whirlwind of disguises, secrets and perfectly timed revelations as the couple plot to out manoeuvre him.

Opera North’s brand-new production reimagines the action in a stylish modern country house, bringing a fresh twist to a story that has delighted audiences for centuries. Beneath the playful mischief, Mozart’s phenomenal score – performed live by the company’s orchestra – sparkles with emotional depth.

In striking contrast, Peter Grimes (Friday 20th March 2026) offers a gripping portrait of life in a close-knit coastal community. Benjamin Britten’s haunting opera centres on the troubled fisherman Peter Grimes, an outsider whose uneasy place within the village grows increasingly fraught as suspicion and rumour swirl around him.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, this acclaimed production has earned widespread praise, including the South Bank Show Opera Award. With its sweeping orchestral passages and powerful storytelling, it captures both the beauty and brutality of life by the sea.

Together, the two productions offer a compelling introduction to opera’s remarkable range – from Mozart’s joyful mischief to Britten’s dramatic intensity – promising a memorable week at Newcastle Theatre Royal.

Tickets for both productions can be purchased at theatreroyal.co.uk or from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 0191 232 7010.
