The Ultimate Guide to Newcastle's Sandwich Shops
Sandwich shops are on the rise and we're loving it
Handsome Sandwich
206 Chillingham Road NE6 5LN
This is a popular and cheerful spot on Chillingham Road with regularly rotating menus of sandwiches. You can’t go wrong with their classic BLT, but there’s always something good on the menu to try. A side of their posh browns is a must.
Breadwin
Pilgrim Street NE1 6QF
Breadwin regularly has a queue out the door, and with good reason. Their sandwiches are bursting with fillings, from Philly cheesesteak and chicken caesar (with plenty of Parmesan) to egg mayo and hot honey chicken. There’s even a curated selection of sweet treats and speciality drinks.
Sorcerer’s
Arch 4, Forth Street NE1 3NZ
You'll find this unassuming spot behind the train station. We love the retro vibe inside – vintage movie posters on the walls, a collection of VHS movies on rotation, and classic rock over the speakers. The menu is a streamline selection of filled subs, and their special homemade pies are unbelievable (the crack pie is our favourite).
Lita
271 Jesmond Road, Jesmond NE2 1LB
The sandwich options here are split between hot, cold and English muffin options. As well as great butties, enjoy a range of beer and coffee in this vibey spot on Jesmond Road. Get here early – it’s popular.
Dot Bagels
250 Chillingham Road, Heaton NE6 5LQ
This is a cult favourite in the city, with another location near Haymarket. The bagels are filled to bursting with plenty to enjoy besides including hash pops, baked treats and great coffee. Salmon with cream cheese and capers is our go-to.
Laneway & Co
17–21 High Bridge NE1 1EW
Technically not purely a sandwich shop, their sandwich offering is nevertheless deserving of praise. Fresh sandwiches can be found on the counter (and we’re obsessed with their current chicken caesar option) or made to order off the menu.
King Baby Bagels
Grainger Market, Grainger Street NE1 5QQ
This is another cult favourite we love. From within their pink palace in Grainger Market, enjoy a curated range of filled bagels, cookies and coffee options. The ‘0191’ is an ode to the North East, thick ham and a healthy layer of pease pudding.
Andre’s
4 King John Terrace, Heaton NE6 5XY
This is an under the radar spot we love with an irreverent approach to sandwiches. They open when they want, serve what they want, and are absolutely worth visiting. Keep an eye on their socials for hours and offerings.

More of our favourite sandwich spots
Sonny’s
172–175 High Street West, Sunniside, Sunderland SR1 1UP
Found within Pop Recs, Sonny’s sandwiches make the most of their fresh focaccia loaves. As well as hefty sandwiches, they also have a great speciality coffee and breakfast selection. Check their blackboard for other specials you won’t want to miss.
Uncle’s
34 Spence Terrace, North Shields NE29 0JE
This is a new, authentically Italian spot that we’re loving. Everything is baked in-house, made fresh daily. From the menu, expect classic panuozzo layered with everything from mortadella and rocket to pistachio cream, spicy salami, stracciatella, sun-dried tomatoes and hot honey.
Zibby’s
2 Monkgate, York YO31 7PE
Zibby’s really lives by their motto of no sad sandwiches. Think aubergine parmos, bacon brie and hot honey, and mouthwatering Cubanos. Zibby’s is open seven days a week and has a loyal following.
Elbows On the Table
27 Wellington Street, Leeds LS1 4EA
New to Wellington Street and open until late, this is the place to go for salt beef sandwiches, beer and wine. The menu is straightforward and locally-sourced, and there’s even a cheese counter.
Mr Cooper’s Coffee House
72 Church Street, Whitby YO22 4AS
Fans of bagels will love Mr Cooper’s. The menu is updated regularly, so there’s often something new to try. Smoked salmon is always a classic, but the Hot Mess is a must – homemade chilli jam, egg, Emmental, hot honey and spring onion.
