Just Keep Swimming

Ilkley Lido is celebrating its 90th birthday this weekend! On Sunday 11th join the celebrations and bring along your own picnic and inflatables. There’ll be live music and dance, a fashion show, a vintage swimsuit competition, a raffle, a photo booth and plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained throughout the day.

A Good Laugh

Lee Kyle, Neil Harris, Anja Atkinson, Kelly Rickard and Gavin Webster will come together at The Stand Comedy Club in Newcastle this Thursday 8th for a special comedy night raising vital funds for local charity Changing Lives, which supports people facing the most challenging of circumstances across the region. All profits from the evening will go towards helping support people to make lasting, positive change in their lives.

Bet On It

Face painting, live music and a huge funfair means every member of your family can enjoy Newcastle Racecourse’s special race day this Sunday. There will be seven races to enjoy, and children go free.

Family Fun

The award-winning Teach Rex team are bringing their interactive show to Northern Stage this weekend (10th May), after performing 45 shows at the Natural History Museum! In this one-hour show with music and special effects, families can get up close to realistic dinosaurs and learn more about these prehistoric creatures. Stunt shows, donkey rides, fairground rides and car shows will help raise money for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice at The Brontë Gathering in Cullingworth on 10th and 11th May. There’ll be an Extreme Monster Truck Show too.

Beacons of Light

This Thursday 8th communities will join together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, which marks the end of World War II in Europe. Street parties and celebrations will be taking place across the country, including at the headland at Seaton Sluice Harbour where a choir will sing wartime songs and there’ll be a lighting of the beacon. These beacons will illuminate the night sky across the country. A special service will take place at Durham Cathedral followed by bell-ringing as the Guild of Ringers take part in the National Ring Out in Celebration event. From 9pm the cathedral will be lit up red. Visitors to Beamish can listen to original VE Day wireless broadcasts and there’ll be re-enactor displays, including vehicles, on show. At Yorkshire Air Museum there’ll be a memorial service in the chapel and commemorations continue into the weekend (on 10th and 11th) with a VE Day street party as part of their We’ll Meet Again event.

Say Cheers

Local brewers including Atom Beers, Ossett Brewery and Munyard Brewery are at Hull Minster serving up pints ’til Saturday. Don’t miss this Beer Festival whether there’ll also be food and music from more talented locals. Prefer a cocktail? It’s World Cocktail Day on 13th May, so why not prepare by trying out these six simple cocktail recipes?

Walk This Way

The Elsdon Burn Walk in Northumberland Naional Park was renamed the Big Dan Burn Walk to celebrate the Blyth-born defender's Carabao Cup opening goal, and now the name change has been extended until September as more and more people have been taking on this walking trail. Why not follow the route this weekend?
