With the summer holidays looming, now's the time to start thinking about ways to entertain the kids when the school year ends

The classic musical The Sound of Music is being performed by Opera North at Leeds Grand Theatre this July. With its heartwarming story and much-loved tunes, it could be just the ticket for a day to remember.

Here are our top tips for making the most of your trip.

Take advantage of a ticket deal

One of our ‘Favourite Things’ is the special family ticket deal currently up for grabs. Two adults and two children (with a minimum recommended age of eight years) can go to the show for just £130, or £170 if you fancy even better seats – a saving of around 25 percent on the usual ticket price. In fact, there’s a £10 discount off the standard price on every single child ticket across the auditorium.

Leave the car at home

Leeds Grand Theatre is easy to reach by public transport. A 15-minute walk from both the bus and train station, it also benefits from having plenty of bus stops nearby for anyone travelling more locally. When planning your journey, remember that discounted train tickets are available for younger children, with a family railcard offering further savings. A Family DaySaver is a great way to enjoy unlimited off-peak bus and train travel anywhere in West Yorkshire.

Plan your pit-stop

During the summer holidays, kids eat free at HAR bar which is only a few doors down from the theatre and serves tasty East Asian-inspired street food by Yuzu. There’s plenty of choice, with the children’s menu including mini katsu curry, egg fried rice and the perennial favourite, crispy chicken with chips. Even more appetising is that you get a kid’s meal free of charge with every adult meal purchased. Book in advance or simply walk up on the day – the choice is yours.

Be home before bedtime

At two hours 20 minutes, the stage show is actually shorter than the film. It also includes a handy 20-minute interval for that all-important toilet break or to get a drink, ice cream or sweet treat. There are several day-time performances to choose from during the week and at weekends and the good news is that, even if you opt for an evening show, it will finish by 9.30pm when it’s still light outside.

Book your tickets soon

Tickets are selling fast so, to ensure you get to sit in your favourite spot, we recommend booking as soon as possible. You can do this online here or by contacting the Opera North Box Office team on 0113 223 3600. They’ll also be happy to answer any queries you may have.

Based on the Curve production, The Sound of Music opens at Leeds Grand Theatre on 9th July and runs until 1st August.
