Our little one was excited to join the audience to see the sold-out performance of Northern Ballet's Tortoise & The Hare at Northern Stage this spring

This production had already proved to be a hit on CBeebies and is a fantastic introduction to ballet.

The race is on with the Tortoise & the Hare. In their renowned playful way, Northern Ballet’s dancers tell this much-loved tale with captivating choreography, colourful costumes and an imaginative set.

A cheeky hare boasts about his speed and no one thinks a thoughtful tortoise can win a race against him – but when the hare gets distracted (by games and treats), the doubters are in for a surprise, and we’re backing the tortoise all the way.

At just 40 minutes long, this ballet is perfect even for the most fidgety of children and keeps their attention with cheerful music they want to clap along to and a vibrant cast of characters (a mole, a bee, a squirrel, bunnies and a beautiful butterfly). All of those characters prove to be the perfect distraction for the hare!

Kudos goes to choreographers Dreda Blow and Sebastian Loe for this fantastic production. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next!

Northern Ballet’s Tortoise & the Hare plays Hull New Theatre on 20th April, Middlesbrough Theatre on 24th April, Barnsley Civic on 5th May, Bridlington Spa on 7th May, St George's Hall, Bradford on 11th May and The Maltings, Berwick on 25th May.
