Why You Should Visit Bradford This Summer

This summer, visit ‘Made by Many Hands’ at Bradford Industrial Museum (until 16th November), an exhibition celebrating the many crafts found across Bradford district. It is accompanied by a series of workshops and events which can be enjoyed at the dedicated Heritage Craft Room.

Bradford’s heritage buildings provide a stunning backdrop to a selection of museums and galleries across the district. At Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, artist Jim Moir (widely known as Vic Reeves) presents the eye-catching Neo Fauna until 31st August, while Bill Bailey’s Extraordinary Portraits are at the city centre venue Loading Bay until 26th July. The striking artwork of David Hockney sits within the equally iconic Salts Mill in Saltaire, which also houses independent retailers, dining and exhibition spaces.

This year, Saltaire UNESCO World Heritage Site is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its designation. Explore the heritage trail to learn more about the creation of this fascinating place and embrace its creativity – perhaps by joining a workshop at The Little Craft House or creating your own unique pottery souvenir at Salts Pots.

Be energised by the wild, windswept moors around Haworth and step into the imaginations of the Brontë sisters, who traversed this landscape while writing their classic novels. Visit the Brontë Birthplace in Thornton and the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth to build a fuller picture of their lives. Continue this thread of creativity by joining community making at South Square Centre, or visiting The Classroom at Cobbles and Clay, a welcoming workshop hub in the heart of Haworth village.

Beside the River Wharfe, the busy town of Ilkley features a range of independent shops and restaurants, making it a great place to support local producers. Look out for the Summer Makers Fair at Ilkley Manor House (25th–26th July) and the Real Ilkley Food Market held on the first Sunday of every month.
