Thousands of seals can be spotted across Coquet Island
We’ve teamed up with Puffin Cruises to offer one lucky Living North reader the chance to win an hour-long seal watching cruise to spot them.
Puffin Cruises began in 1969, established by skipper Steven Banks’s grandfather Dave Gray, offering one-hour boat trips to Coquet Island lying off the coast of Amble to see the puffins. Today he and his uncle David Gray have carried on Dave’s wishes and run the family business, sailing year-round to Coquet Island.
Alongside the puffin colonies, four different species of terns can be spotted – the Common Tern, Arctic Tern, Sandwich Tern and the rarest seabird in Europe, the Roseate Tern. There’s also a huge grey seal colony on the island and almost 2,000 seals are seen all year round, basking on the rocks. From August, once the puffins have migrated, Puffin Cruises begin their Grey Seal Cruises.
The boat trips are perfect for families, suitable for all ages and sail from Amble Harbour. You can find the booking office and gift shop located in Amble Harbour Village, packed full of bespoke puffin and seal merch. Sailing times change to operate with the tide times and the winner of this competition can also choose two soft cuddly seal toys from the gift shop.

This prize is for a Seal Watching Cruise to Coquet Island from Amble Harbour with Puffin Cruises. The prize includes a family ticket for two adults and two children to take a one-hour seal watching cruise to Coquet Island and must be taken by 31st October 2026. Once selected, the winner of this family ticket should contact the booking office directly on 07752 861914 to check the latest sailing schedule, arrange a sailing time and receive their family ticket from the booking office. The winner can also choose two cuddly seal toys from the shop for the children. The prize is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash or any other alternative. Subject to availability. Entrants must be 18 or over.
