Nestled on the banks of the River Wear near Sunderland, WWT Washington is a green urban oasis, home to wildlife and habitats which change with the seasons and always offers something new to discover.
Autumn is about migratory journeys – large-scale nature on the move and at its most visceral – with black-tailed godwit, greenshank and curlew among the many species arriving at Wader Lake, as skeins of majestic geese pass noisily overhead.
A mindful wander around the wetlands offers rich colours, endless skies and evolving landscapes to experience and enjoy.
Berry-laden trees and well-stocked feeding stations provide feasts for redwing and fieldfare, while the woodlands become sheltered sanctuaries for brambling and redpoll, mating bats and young owls looking for territories.
The centre’s collection animals are a thrill to watch too, with pink Chilean flamingos flocking elegantly in the golden autumn light and Asian short-clawed otters Musa, Mimi and Buster revelling in attention from onlookers.
Waterside Café provides the perfect spot to relax or refuel; be it with a hearty breakfast ahead of a day of wetland exploration or unwinding after time spent roaming the wetlands, woodlands and lagoons. Sit and enjoy home-cooked food on a covered terrace with stunning views of wildlife including Eurasian cranes and barnacle geese on the stream below.
