Lazy mornings and cafés trips are the best

When it comes to good cafés for an enormous stack of pancakes, home-made cake, or the perfect Flat White, York really excels.

Mannion & Co Kitchen

Never without a queue, this café is certainly popular with tourists and locals alike – but trust us, it’s worth the wait. Having recently opened a second cafe in Helmsley, business is certainly booming for Mannion & Co. Almost everything is homemade, including the bread, and there is a good selection of gluten free options available. Arrive early to avoid missing out on the famous sausage rolls and to tackle the giant pavlova.

Brew and Brownie

Oreo brownies, crunchie brownies, cookie dough brownies, there really is a brownie for everyone here. But that’s not all - Brew and Brownie are also known for their huge stacks of pancakes and their mean eggs Benedict. Whether you’re after sweet or savoury, you can enjoy some of York’s best local produce here.

Café Concerto

On the doorstop of one of York’s biggest attractions, York Minster, Café Concerto is the perfect café for anyone with a sweet tooth (try Annie’s stickty toffee pudding) and music lovers alike. Enjoy your daytime or evening in this quaint, music-inspired café where sheet music covers the walls.

Little Shambles Tearooms

This little tearoom, in a characteristic Medieval building, beautifully epitomises everything people think of when they think of York. The picture-perfect tearoom also serves a much loved cream tea at an even more loved price. It’s tucked away in one of the Shambles’ famous crooked buildings, so make sure not to miss it.

Gatehouse Coffee

York is famous for its City Walls, so where better to enjoy a hot chocolate on a cold morning than inside the walls themselves. This unique Medieval café, run by Christian volunteers, is a step back in time, and despite being located slightly further out from the centre, it is definitely worth the trip to see the views from the roof terrace.

The Perky Peacock

This café, found within York City Walls, is in a Medieval stone tower. The rounded walls are undoubtedly unique and quirky, and they serve some delicious cinnamon toasted bagels. This gem just celebrated its 8th birthday and it’s dog friendly too.

Burr Coffee

This cosy coffee shop doesn’t have a lot of seats, but it does have a lot to offer. They serve a selection of house salads daily and are a favourite with commuters picking up their morning coffee on their way from the station. If you’re looking for something stronger, they also have a selection of wines and beers to choose from. Their famous scotch eggs sell out fast but if you can get your hands on one, you’re in for a treat.
