As summer fades and the forest begins its transformation to the season of falling leaves, hot chocolates and fresh breezy mornings, it's the perfect time to discover the magic of Dalby Forest

With leaves sweeping across the forest canopy in shades of gold, amber and red, there are miles of peaceful trails to explore in arguably the forest's most spectacular time of year.

Conveniently located on the southern slopes of the North York Moors National Park, Dalby Forest offers over 8,500 acres of woodland, making it one of Yorkshire's top destinations for outdoor adventures. Whether you're seeking a gentle woodland stroll, a family day out, an adrenaline-fuelled mountain bike ride or simply a chance to pause and reconnect with nature, the forest comes alive with colour and wildlife throughout this wonderful time of year.

One of the best ways to experience the season is on foot, and the Woodcock Way is the perfect autumn route for keen hikers. This circular trail showcases some of Dalby's most spectacular views across riggs and dales all whilst winding through impressive evergreens and mixed woodland that radiate with seasonal colour. Along the route, walkers can enjoy peaceful forest tracks and plenty of opportunities to pause and take in the sights and sounds of autumn. The route is populated with mossy glades, impressive fungi and fantastic ferns that encapsulate a truly magical woodland experience.

Keep your eyes open for signs of wildlife as you wander. Autumn is a busy time for many of the forest's residents as they prepare for the winter months ahead. Head to the forest on an evening to see bats swooping against the night sky or wake up early to hear the birds making the most of their dawn chorus. Early morning visitors may also be rewarded with the sight of deer moving quietly through the trees.

Make a trip to the forest on a night and experience the wonder of an autumnal night sky, where you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Take a blanket and flask of your favourite brew with you for a stargazing experience you won’t forget.

For families, Dalby Forest offers plenty more to discover beyond the vast landscape. Children can let their imagination run wild in the play areas, search for fascinating sculptures amongst the trees or discover the forest's family-friendly Room on the Broom activity trail and help Witch to gather her magic supplies. The friendly Visitor Centre team are on hand to tailor your day to suit your group’s every age and ability.

Adventure seekers are equally well catered for. Dalby is well recognised for its mountain biking, with trails ranging from beginner routes to challenging technical cross-country riding. With a 21-mile red route, there is more than enough trail for a full day adventure with friends. Alternatively, the more casual visitor can explore an extensive network of forest tracks, taking in some of the most stunning forest scenery in the region.

No autumn visit would be complete without taking a moment to simply slow down and enjoy the season. Find a favourite viewpoint, breathe in the crisp air and appreciate the display of colour that unfolds across parts of the forest each year. It's a reminder for us to stop, slow down and appreciate nature’s soft transition to the winter months.

After your adventure, refuel with a visit to one of Dalby’s two on-site cafés, where you can enjoy warming drink and seasonal treats while reflecting on your day in the woods.

Whether you're looking for a peaceful walk, a family day out or an active outdoor escape, Dalby Forest offers the perfect autumn adventure. Put on those hiking boots, follow the trails and discover why this unique Yorkshire landscape keeps visitors coming back all year-round.
