The Best Places to Eat on the North East Coast

Where to eat beside the seaside
Audela
Named after the last boat to be built in Berwick, the menu at this coastal gem is inspired heavily by the produce of Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Think Berwick crab with pickled carrot, Borders venison loin with pearl barley and pickled walnut, and Borders wood pigeon with beetroot. Every month, expect a new tasting menu which follows the seasons.

Bewicks
Though it has another venue in Rothbury, those on the coast can head to Amble for the best of Bewicks, a relaxed dining spot with a sophisticated menu that really packs a punch. Split largely between small and large plates, the dishes are bright and bold, using European flavour profiles to highlight the best local produce.

Bertram’s
Twice-baked local lamb, pan-seared roe deer and Boulmer crab cakes can all be enjoyed at this unassuming neighbourhood bistro which sits neatly between Georgian and Victorian buildings on Warkworth’s main street. The breakfast menu is just as packed with fresh Northumbrian produce, and there’s no better place to relax with a drink and lunch than in their sheltered courtyard to the rear of the restaurant.

Jasper’s Bistro
Jasper’s tends to fly under the radar for those not already in the know, but for outstanding seafood it’s a must. You’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t sample the specials board, which is regularly updated to reflect what’s fresh in from the local boats. For something really extravagant, choose the towering seafood platter (fair warning – this needs to be ordered in advance).

The Lord Crewe
Bamburgh may only be small but it has an impressive clutch of quality eateries and The Lord Crewe is undoubtedly one of our favourites. Its refined offering has deservedly secured it an AA Rosette and although the focus of the menu is on elevated seafood, there’s plenty here to enjoy besides – their Sunday lunches are superb.

Riley’s Fish Shack
Guests travel from far and wide to sample the cooking at this renowned eatery in King Edward’s Bay - and with good reason. Refined yet robust, the portions here are generous and although there is space inside to sit, everything here is best enjoyed on the sand. Book a deckchair beside one of their fire pits and tuck in as you watch the tide come in.

The Seaview Restaurant
The views here are as breathtaking as the name would suggest, covering dramatic coastal cliffs, long stretches of sand, and the historic pier. There’s a large outside terrace and although the menu changes regularly, we can recommend their famous Saltburn crab brioche.
