It was a landmark day at Westfield as they welcomed their first boy through the doors of the prestigious Oakfield Road campus in Gosforth

Westfield share how this significant milestone builds on the strong success of their Junior programme for girls - now officially open to boys.

'It’s a truly historic moment for us. As we prepare to welcome more boys, this stands as a testament to our dedicated staff and governors who continually ensure Westfield remains an exceptional school.’

Headmaster, Mr Neil Walker

Our decision to welcome boys was reinforced by our outstanding outcome from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection. ISI are the DfE-approved equivalent of Ofsted for independent schools. Highlights from the inspection include:

• ‘High-quality pastoral care ensures that pupils learn and play in a safe and supportive environment, with their wellbeing prioritised.’
• ‘Pupils experience a wide range of subjects and learning opportunities that prepare them well for future study and life beyond school.’

These results reaffirm what our families already know: Westfield provides exceptional education, care and opportunities for every child. Our success is further recognised through our shortlisting as a ‘Regional Independent School of the Year – North’ in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards.

What Makes Westfield Stand Out

A Unique Learning Environment

Nestled within six acres of green open space, Westfield offers a natural, calming and enriching environment rarely found so close to Newcastle City Centre. This setting supports academic success and individual wellbeing.

Our Values

We believe that everyone has the potential to be an amazing person and change the world. We aim to prepare them to be confident young adults and develop the full potential of each child’s character through learning that is enjoyable and meaningful. Westfield values not only the child, but the family. Parents, carers and extended family are an integral part of our community. It is no surprise that our pupils, past and present, often say: ‘Westfield is like my family’.

Year-Round Forest School for All Ages

Our on-site Forest School, operating in all seasons, is central to our philosophy. We know that outdoor learning improves physical health, boosts mental wellbeing, strengthens social skills, and cultivates environmental awareness. This is boosted by seasonal beach school to extend our pupils’ learning and experience even further. Our learner-led approach enhances confidence, self-esteem and long-term retention of knowledge.

Junior House: Learning by Stage, Not Age

Our Junior House follows a highly effective, Scandinavian-inspired structure where children learn by stage rather than age, guided by expert teachers who create nurturing, creative and enriching experiences.

Senior House: A Personalised Approach

Westfield Senior House is the only independent senior girls’ school in Gosforth. We know that, during their teenage years, girls develop at a different rate to boys and deserve learning that is tailored to them rather than homogenous. Maintaining smaller classes allows us to know every pupil as an individual – we do not believe in ‘one size fits all’.

Round Square

Round Square is a global education philosophy shared by over 250 schools in more than 50 countries. Following the influence of Kurt Hahn who founded Gordonstoun School and Outward Bound, Westfield is based on six ideals: Internationalism, Democracy, the Environment, Adventure Leadership and Service to others. Through the Round Square Discoveries, our pupils develop character through learning and living: compassion, team-work, tenacity, sustainability and responsibility. In our Early Years, these characteristics are taught through play and as children get older they are brought out through the curriculum, drop-down challenge days and through active involvement in Round Square activities both in and out of school.

Through our membership of Round Square, global thinking and leadership is encouraged and connecting our pupils with schools worldwide for conferences, collaboration and exchanges. We hosted a conference for 10–11 year olds from nine different schools across seven countries and 11 time zones; in the last year, pupils have been on exchanges to Korea, Australia and Japan; Westfield was the global development school for the Junior Discovery Heroes and through presenting at international conferences has developed links with schools in Europe, North America, Africa and South Asia.

Next Steps & Admissions

Assessment Morning for Year 7, 8 and 9 girls: Tuesday 27th January 2026.
Junior Boys and Girls: Following our approved material change from the DfE, we now offer places to both boys and girls. Over the summer, our Junior facilities received significant investment, creating a vibrant, purpose-built environment that sets us apart in the region.

As a Living North reader, we hope you’ll see that Westfield’s success is not just found on our website – it is reflected in what independent inspectors have seen, validated and celebrated.

At Westfield, children are happy, healthy, safe and seen.
