Pearls were presented as gifts to Chinese royalty as early as 2,300 BC while in ancient Rome, pearl jewellery was considered the ultimate status symbol. Popular in the early 20th century as cultured pearls became common, Coco Chanel was rarely seen without them and Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn were also big fans. Their popularity waned a little in the 80s as they became synonymous with older ladies in twin-sets, but pearls are once again big news (the bigger the better for 2023) and you’ll find them incorporated into everything from delicate eternity rings to outsized earrings.
