Our Favourite Bakeries in York
The historic city of York has hidden gems tucked around nearly every corner. Here are just some of our favourite spots in the city for freshly baked goods
Heppni Bakeri
You’ll find this sweet spot on Swinegate, only a five-minute walk from the Minster. It’s a great place to slow down your day with something delicious, with an emphasis on all things cosy and comforting. Their fabulous creations always make the most of the seasons, and you can enjoy something new with each visit.

Flori
The simple set up makes Flori feel like an undiscovered gem, but this is a firm favourite in York. Expect expertly crafted Scandi-inspired bakes influenced by what’s local and in season. We recommend stopping by early to avoid missing out, and you’ll also find a streamlined coffee menu to choose from.

Little Arras
We love the industrial vibe of this bakery, which is a fabulous side-project from the team behind Arras, who wanted to keep experimenting with all things bread. The counter is piled high with the day’s creations, from croissants and bear claws to cruffins, tarts and cakes.

Cosgriff & Sons
A family-run micro bakery (across the street from Clifford’s Tower) which has earned rave reviews for its creations. Although they specialise in sourdough, there’s plenty to find here besides including speciality sandwiches, sausage rolls and sweet treats.

V’s Artisan Kitchen
This sunny bakery on Gillygate brings a taste of Greece to the streets of York. Tuck into caramelised onion and whipped feta tarts, chickpea salsa and sweet potato pies, and traditional peinirli (an elongated Greek pizza). There’s plenty of classically British options too, including lemon cake, caramel shortbread and cherry bakewell cake.

Shutishuti Patisserie
Proving good things come in small packages, Shutishuti is a micro bakery that really holds its own. From the counter take your pick from a range of delicate creations including opera cake, seasonal tarts and wonderfully flaky pastries.

Dough
This is where you need to head for all things bread. Shop everything from loaves and fresh focaccia to pizza, calzones and sweet bakes. The offering rotates regularly, and ahead of Easter we’re obsessed with their freshly-made hot cross buns.

Haxby Bakehouse
This lies slightly beyond the city, but it needed a mention. Named in The Good Food Guide’s list of Britain’s Best Bakeries, this bakery is known for its bread – specifically sourdough staples and slow-fermented yeast loaves. Stock up on local pantry staples while you’re here.
