From delicious artisan roasted coffee to locally-produced cheese, jams and hand-tempered chocolate – here’s our pick of the finest and freshest local produce available across the North East this Christmas.

Mark Robertson has been making farmhouse cheeses in the heart of Northumberland since 1984, and after moving into the 19th century granary on the Blagdon Estate, Northumberland Cheese have been producing a full range of artisan cheese with a range of different milks. Using traditional craftsmanship alongside modern practices, expect to find everything from oak-smoked cow’s cheese to goat’s and sheep’s cheese, as well as locally-made chutneys, crackers and hampers filled with all the accompaniments you need for a cheesy Christmas feast. Aussie-born Alex Forsyth learned the art of speciality coffee roasting from his dad in Sydney before moving to the North East and setting up Baristocracy in 2017. Founded in Tynemouth in 2010, Gareth James is an independent artisan chocolatier making all their chocolate goodies onsite in their upstairs studio. Capturing the true characteristics of each ingredient and matching each flavour to its perfect chocolate, there’s plenty of choice here, from decadent brownies and chocolate slabs to bars and pavés, plus a range of selection boxes, drinking chocolate and vegan bars and bites.

Woodcrest Kitchen
This award-winning artisan producer handmakes delicious sweet and savoury preserves, including jams, chutneys and marmalades, in the heart of Burnopfield. Using the finest ingredients, most of which are grown on the family allotment or locally foraged, Woodcrest Kitchen follow traditional methods, making just six to 12 jars at a time. In 2015 they diversified into spelt production and since then have become the UK’s largest producer of spelt products and won several Great Taste Awards. Their ice cream flavours range from real strawberry to double ginger, and their popular cheeses include a mellow buttery blue, a traditional gouda and an oak-smoked cheese. At Teesdale Cheesemakers artisan cheese is handmade using the milk from the family farm. Using traditional methods, you’ll find everything from soft and semi-soft to crumbly cheeses, including a mellow goat’s cheese, a garlic cheese made with mulberry milk, a farmhouse brie and a red-veined blue. Book onto one of their experience days where you can master the basics and learn how to experiment with cheese at home.

Cousins Charlotte Thompson and Farah Weedon founded Pilgrims Gelato in 2011 with a mission to create seriously tasty vegan gelato which is free from everything but the flavour. At their scoop shops on Holy Island and in Bamburgh you’ll find flavours including coffee espresso, raspberry cheesecake, chocolate brownie, sea salt and double ginger – plus their free-from gelato comes in fully-recyclable tins with an edible spoon.
