Review: Robbie Williams' Toon Takeover for Come Together Festival

Robbie Williams headed to the Town Moor for the inaugural Come Together Festival
Wednesday’s artists included Little Mix star Perrie, the Kaiser Chiefs and Robbie Williams, who hasn’t been in the North East since 2014, and the fans were clearly delighted at his return.
The self-proclaimed entertainer whose aim, he declared, was to be the ‘king of entertainment’, certainly put every effort into his near two-hour performance, which included many of his biggest hits and a few well-received cover versions including My Way. Cheeky as always, he played up with references to his former band Take That, and his self-deprecating humour provided plenty of laughs as he chatted to an on-screen 17-year-old version of himself.

The huge crowd loved it all, especially those in the Golden Circle as he made several trips to the security fence to meet and greet his fans, but he made sure to include everyone in the audience with some well-timed local banter. It may have been a while since he’s been in the North East but he’s certainly lost none of his energy, nor his ability to charm as he powered through what is an astonishing catalogue of much-loved hits, and as the ‘king of entertainment’ he’s going to be hard to beat.
Wednesday’s lineup also included a fantastic set from Yorkshire icons Kaiser Chiefs, local lass Perrie (Edwards) who also sang some of Little Mix’s hit songs, and Newcastle favourite Andrew Cushin.
Come Together Festival returns to the Town Moor on Friday 22nd when Kings of Leon will top the bill, supported by Courteeners, and tickets are still available.
