If you're looking for a fabulous family day out and some world class equestrian sport, head to Belsay International Horse Trials (15th-17th May), taking place against the stunning backdrop of historic Belsay Hall and Castle.

After a fantastically successful step up to CCI4* level in 2025, Belsay 2026 will host the stars of the eventing world competing in international classes at CCI4*-S, CCI3*-S, CCI2*-S and CCI1*, as well as British Eventing national classes from Advanced to BE105. The event also features Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse qualifiers, showjumping and arena eventing classes, a BSPS Working Hunter Pony and the Native Pony Festival, as well as the ever-popular inter-hunt relay.

Living North readers can save 20 percent on any adult or child one-day ticket using the discount code LNBELSAY26 when they book tickets before 14th May.

Families should book their tickets now – you don’t want to miss out on what organisers have billed as a true celebration of Northumberland. New features include the Northumbrian Larder, showcasing the best local food, drink and crafts from the region and sponsored by Turnbulls Northumbrian Food. Visitors will be able to graze and browse their way through Northumberland, discovering artisan makers, local producers, seasonal flavours, handcrafted goods and irresistible local treats.

Corbridge-based Brocksbushes Farm Shop is supporting Belsay’s brand-new Family Fun Trail – a great adventure through the showground leading to the family fun zone at Belsay Castle, which includes access to the English Heritage Wild Man adventure playground. There will also be archery, hosted by the Border Reivers, a hobby horse arena sponsored by Newcastle Racecourse, and a fun fair.

Book tickets to enjoy the entertainment on offer which also includes the star-studded Healing Power of the Horse Masterclass in the Womble Bond Dickinson International Arena each lunchtime. Participants from RDA Morpeth, Stepney Bank Stables and KL Therapy ponies will take part in the demonstration, which will be hosted by former event rider Saffron Cresswell and will also include 14-times CCI5*-winning athlete William Fox-Pitt and former European champion Nicola Wilson. All three riders have suffered serious injury during their time in the sport and understand completely the healing power that time spent with horses can have.

There is plenty to amuse dog lovers visiting Belsay Horse Trials too. The Belsay Bark Dog Show, running on Saturday and Sunday, is sponsored by the Northumberland Dog Hotel and features have-a-go dog agility as well as a scurry and plenty of fun and friendly classes for your four-legged friends. Dachshund lovers will definitely want to get involved in Belsay’s Dachshund Derby, being held at 5pm on Saturday 16th May. It is set to be the funniest feature of the event featuring the speediest dachshunds around – all in support of the British Eventing Support Trust.

Northumberland’s leading five-star hotel, Matfen Hall, is again partnering with Belsay to offer Belsay Horse Trials’s guests special deals on accommodation, and this year will be providing a minibus to take them to the event each day. Alongside Lycetts and Ad Gefrin Distillery, Matfen Hall is also helping Belsay Horse Trials expand its popular hospitality facilities this year.

‘Northumberland is the most wonderful county, with spectacular scenery, so much history and so many fantastic local businesses and producers,’ says organiser, Laura de Wesselow. ‘We are really proud that Belsay is Northern England’s premier equestrian event, and we see this as a great opportunity to promote our home county.’

New for 2026 is Membership, which includes event entry, forward parking, programme and entrance to the Members’ Marquee, and Picnic Parking, offering excellent views of the international cross-country courses with the stunning backdrop of Belsay.
