1 The Limes is a beautifully preserved period home in the seaside town of Whitburn

We take a peek Inside this unusual home.

This is one of three homes that was created when The Limes, which was originally a single residence, was divided a few decades ago. The property is Victorian, and has an impressive stone exterior complete with neoclassical pediments above the windows.

You enter via a lobby which leads through an entrance hallway, complete with elegant return staircase and a downstairs WC.

The downstairs living room has some of the house’s best period features, including a feature fireplace, decorative ceiling mouldings and from here, French doors lead into an orangery with tiled flooring and exposed brick walls – the perfect spot for sitting and admiring the front garden. The front gardens can also be admired from the large bay window in the additional sitting room which also has a period fireplace.

To the rear of the house is the kitchen-diner. This is a bright, airy room with huge windows to look out over the garden. Next to the kitchen is the rear sun room, more than big enough to function as an additional dining room in summer if you fancy al fresco dining with a bit less sea breeze.

A geographically appropriate stained glass window of a ship is the centrepiece of the first floor landing. There are four bedrooms on this floor: two large doubles and two smaller rooms. The principal bedroom is ensuite and has its own bay window with working shutters and fitted storage.

The house has lawned gardens to the front and back which has the novel feature of a Grade II-listed ice house (a pre-refrigerator phenomenon). We can’t verify how well it currently performs, but sincerely hope the future owners are partial to a frozen margarita. To the side of the house, a ‘through and through’ detached double garage can be accessed both from the large driveway to the front of the house and a timber gate to the rear.

The house is located on a leafy street in Whitburn, surrounded by other period properties and elevated from the main road by a grassy bank. It would be perfect for anyone who loves to walk along Sunderland’s stunning coastline.
