Escape to one of North Yorkshire's best B&Bs

From the North York Moors and the coast to the rolling Dales, any one of these brilliant B&Bs would make a great base from which to explore the beauty of North Yorkshire.
The Box The Box

The Box

In brief: Three shipping containers that have been transformed into quirky, boutique, glamping-style accommodation on a working farm.
Our highlight: Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the spectacular views.
Insider guide: Choose from the Pig, Rabbit or Duck box, or take all three with family or friends and enjoy getting back to nature while you watch life carry on on the working farm. These gorgeous cabins have been designed for year-round use and have high-speed WiFi should you need to bring work with you. Each one has a master bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living space with log burner, a raised deck and barbecue. There’s also plenty to explore locally and Malton, the food capital of Yorkshire, is on your doorstep.

Stow House

In brief: An arts-inspired boutique B&B in the Dales.
Our highlight: Cocktails courtesy of The Savoy Cocktail Book served from 6–7pm in the sitting room or the library.
Insider guide: In the pretty village of Aysgarth, this super-smart B&B is a step up from your average. There are seven bedrooms in this Victorian home, all named after the artwork which hangs in the rooms. Our favourites are Kes – which boasts views across Wensleydale and photography inspired by Ken Loach’s classic film – and Lovebirds, where the crimson and pink colour scheme is deliciously kitsch. Breakfasts at Stow House are similarly thoughtful, with freshly-squeezed orange juice and homemade bread and granola.

The Endeavour front of building on quaint cobbled street The Endeavour

The Endeavour

In brief: A chic, boutique B&B with a maritime theme on one of the cobbled streets of what was once one of the busiest fishing ports in the North East.
Our highlight: Local produce and artisan food producers come to the fore at breakfast, with treats like Staithes smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or Staithes smoked kippers, alongside full-English and vegan and vegetarian options.
Insider guide: The picturesque coastal town of Staithes has stayed true to its maritime heritage and still has a small fleet of traditional boats sailing from the harbour. In keeping with this, The Endeavour has been extensively refurbished to offer four individually-styled rooms whose calming interiors take subtle inspiration from the history and voyages of HMS Endeavour. In an effort to make the B&B more eco-friendly, they also minimise single-use plastic by using refillable glass jars for their room trays, and providing vegan, cruelty-free toiletries in refillable bottles. From long cliff-top walks to rock-pooling and fossil hunting along Yorkshire’s Dinosaur Coast, or grabbing a line and bucket for crabbing off the harbour walls and finishing off the day with a fish and chip supper, it’s the simple pleasures that make Staithes such a restorative spot to unwind.

The Old Coach House The Old Coach House

The Old Coach House

In brief: A stunning 18th century coach house in the grounds of North Stainley Hall.
Our highlight: All the rooms overlook a delightful courtyard with water features and immaculate topiary.
Insider guide: In terms of settings, it’s difficult to beat the magnificent grounds of North Stainley Hall, where this former coach house stands overlooking the lake. There are eight rooms to choose from, all of which have their charms, but we especially love the exposed beams and vaulted ceilings of the premier and deluxe rooms. With locally-sourced breakfast options to suit all dietary requirements and tastes, The Old Coach House is a luxurious base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales.

Low Mill Guest House

In brief: A Grade II-listed former corn mill on the banks of the River Bain in the Yorkshire Dales has been carefully restored and now offers three characterful guest rooms.
Our highlight: Their riverside garden is an idyllic spot to sit out and watch ducklings paddle by… it also has a full-sized Tardis (or is it a police box?) parked along the path.
Insider guide: Much of the original machinery, like the waterwheel or huge spur wheels and grindstones that form the centrepiece of the guest lounge, still remains and is (in theory) functional. This machinery continues up through the house and into the property’s largest bedroom, the Workshop, in which you can marvel at the cogs and pulleys that stretch up into the eaves. Great attention has also been taken to make sure that guests can enjoy food sourced from local producers at breakfast although, quite sensibly, this is the only place that four-legged friends are not welcome to join you.

Mallard Grange

In brief: A Grade II-listed farmhouse on a working farm.
Our highlight: Rooted in the landscape and packed with character, this 700-year-old farmhouse is historically linked to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, the UNESCO World Heritage Site just a few fields away.
Insider guide: There are four spacious bedrooms here, each including a lounge area, two conveniently located on the ground floor. As you might imagine on a working farm, breakfast includes a range of locally sourced and homemade ingredients including eggs from their hens and honey from their bees. If you’d prefer a slower start to your day, they can also deliver a continental breakfast right to your door. If you’re looking for something more private, they now have a self-catered cabin in the grounds with a fabulous outdoor bath for soaking in views of the countryside.

Mallard Grange Mallard Grange

Carr House Farm

In brief: A 16th century farmhouse surrounded by orchards and meadows.
Our highlight: We love that each room has its own front door and is separate from the main farmhouse.
Insider guide: Privacy and relaxation are the name of the game at Carr House Farm. Breakfast is served in your own private dining room, or can be enjoyed al fresco in a private outdoor sitting area after a night spent in a four-poster bed. Enjoy looking out over a south-facing garden, or spend time nosying at the eclectic collection of antique treasures and photographs charting the history of the house and its inhabitants. There is plenty to visit in this special part of North Yorkshire, but you needn’t go too far for an adventure – why not spend a day birdwatching or taking an icy dip in the natural pool fed by a woodland stream in the grounds?
