The French Quarter is a popular spot for sumptuous sharing plates and evening dining, but the lunch menu is a must-try for Newcastle foodie

It's a pleasant autumn afternoon when we sink into the elegance of this authentic French restaurant, where the shelves are laden with bottles of wine glistening in the sunlight. We're seated at a vintage wooden table in the corner of the restaurant, where I can watch the city slickers strolling Westgate Road, and my colleague can look across the Parisian-inspired interiors.

From Tuesday to Friday, The French Quarter’s formule du midi option offers an authentic bistrot-style lunch with regularly-changing classic French dishes. As we’re served water and lemon and a selection of nuts, we browse the extensive drinks menu and my eye catches the Vin Du Moment board where a white and rosé wine are recommended. I’m persuaded to try the Domaine Wilfried et Réjane – Le Courage des Oiseaux, despite usually preferring a paler rosé. It’s a risk worth taking. I love its fruity flavours whilst the slightly acidic finish makes it a refreshing accompaniment to my dishes. I’m not the only one leaving with a new French favourite. My colleague savours her light Rhône, Les Oliviers red which complements the rich flavours in her dishes. A small glass will comfortably take you through the meal.

There’s something to suit diners with all tastes across the menu. My pan-fried chicken livers are served with a mixed leaf salad whilst walnuts and garlic add texture to the meat, which melts off my fork. It’s a generous portion, which appears to be the case for many of the dishes on the lunch menu, so come hungry! My colleague’s soft grilled leeks are served with perfectly-cooked prawns in a creamy coriander and chive sauce. The kick of coriander really brings out the flavours, and the contrast in textures make this a delicious entrée.

The main courses are a real treat for both the eyes and the tastebuds. Pork medallions are perched on top of a bed of roasted potatoes and onions, and served with a flavour-packed wholegrain mustard sauce. This is a comforting dish ideal for chilly autumn days. I can’t help but try a spoonful of my colleague’s champignon stroganoff, which is rich but delightful. A gorgeous blend of wild mushrooms and baby gherkins melt in your mouth and the mushrooms hold the flavours of the sauce. Served with rice, this a filling main which will take you through the day. The friendly team are more than happy to offer us a takeaway box – but there’s always room for dessert, right?

We think so. My crème brûlée à la banana is light and creamy with a sweet top to crack, while my colleague’s cold and decadent homemade mousse au chocolat is chocolate heaven. Perfect portions to conclude our fabulously French lunch.

As we reluctantly bid The French Quarter au revoir, we agree lunches don’t get much better than this.
