With the Yorkshire Dales to the west and North York Moors to the east, the market town of Northallerton is ideally located and its unusually wide high street is home to plenty of interesting shops

Eat...
Northallerton is home to the most northerly branch of Bettys, where you can enjoy afternoon tea in the world-renowned tea room, or shop for foodie gifts and accessories. Deli and hamper specialist Lewis & Cooper is also located in the centre of town, as is Bellina – an independently owned Belgian chocolate shop with over 70 varieties including marzipan, and unusual flavours such as lime and chilli.

Sleep...
Less than ten minutes drive from Northallerton is the impressive Solberge Hall. A Georgian House Hotel with 24 bedrooms and fine dining restaurant, it is an intimate place to stay and eat. If you prefer something more relaxed, stay at Lovesome Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast on a working farm just four miles north of Northallerton. Enjoy free range eggs from the farm for breakfast and homemade casseroles, pies and puddings in the evening if you want to stay in for supper.

Barkers of Northallerton is the town’s very own independent department store selling everything from homeware and accessories to fashion and footwear. For interiors, Joanna Marco has expert knowledge on fabric and sells its own range of furniture. Yorkshire’s most famous landscape photographer, Joe Cornish, has his beautiful gallery here and it’s also home to a café which has just opened this summer. For home appliances and electrical items pop into Maxwell’s – which has all the big brands such as KitchenAid, Sony and Smeg.

Around the Corner
Visit the stunning 14th century Carthusian priory, Mount Grace, where the ruins clearly show the cells of the monks who once lived there. The entrance takes you through a 13th century manor house which has regular exhibitions and recently restored arts and crafts rooms.

Don't Miss
The town’s oldest house, the Old Fleece. Now an inn, its timber gables and great oak beams are an impressive sight.

Market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays. Pick up fresh fish and game, meat, clothes and hardware from the stalls that fill both sides of the High Street.
