We have some of the best farms in the North East that sell quality cuts of meats and fresh vegtables

From home-reared meat to freshly laid eggs, there are few things better than getting your produce direct from the source. Here are our favourite farm shops to buy the very best this festive season.

This farm shop started in 1978 selling surplus free-range eggs from the back door, but fast forward to today, and North Acomb Farm Shop offer a whole variety of locally-grown produce. From rearing and producing their own bestselling Aberdeen Angus beef, lamb and pork on the farm, to making cakes, meals, pies, pasties, biscuits, black pudding and Scotch eggs in the farm shop kitchen, so much here is homemade and you can taste it in every bite. A one stop shop for everything you’ll need on Christmas day – you can even order a free-range turkey.

The Hodgsons have been farming at Piercebridge since 1964 and it shows. Stocking more than 2,000 organic products including award-winning meat, fresh vegetables, dairy products and more, their farm shop has everything you need to stock up your kitchen shelves. Beef is produced from Aberdeen Angus cattle, pork from Landrace Duroc pigs, and lamb from a mixed flock of Scottish Black Face, Cheviots and home-bred mules, all of which goes straight to the onsite butchers who make burgers, sausages, ham and bacon, as well as your classic joints and cuts – literally field to plate.

Where the Northumbrian coast meets the rolling hills of the Cheviots, Sunnyhills Farm Shop boasts an extensive selection of fresh meat, fruit and veg, locally-baked bread and pies, a cheese counter, alcohol and more. A family-run business, Sunnyhills are dedicated to making their shop welcoming to all, with a popular kids’ play area and a dog-friendly outside seating area. On the outskirts of picturesque Wylam, in the Tyne Valley, this working family farm’s gradual diversification into retail saw the introduction of a traditional farm shop, gift shop, butcher’s and garden centre (enabling the sale of fresh and local produce) followed by the addition of a tea room where you can enjoy a selection of hearty meals and freshly baked goods. Kids will love a trip to Daniel Farm too, with a new fun farm with more than 20 breeds of animal, soft play, inflatables, go-karts and rides.

With a background in the meat trade, the butchery takes centre stage here and the Kitson family take pride in the quality of meat that they sell. This family-run business has been serving the North East for more than 80 years, and over that time has built long-lasting, trusting relationships with customers, suppliers and stockists. With seasonal fruit, vegetables supplied directly from their North Tyneside farm, fresh duck, hen and quail eggs, bottled milk, local cheese and a selection of locally-made jams and chutneys, it’s no wonder they’re one of the region’s best-known. Plus, stocking Christmas trees, as well as logs and kindling, this really is a one-stop-shop for this time of year.

Having farmed in Northumberland for generations, at Moorhouse if they don’t produce it themselves, they always know someone locally who does. More than 80 percent of what they sell comes from within 50 miles – milk, eggs, cheese, preserves and honey come from a few miles away and virtually all their meat comes from their own farm just down the road. A huge range of homemade products is prepared in the kitchen with Scotch eggs, cooked meats and quiches at the deli counter and fresh scones, cakes, biscuits, flapjacks and pies in the bakery.

The Haswell family have been butchers for almost 100 years and are well-known in the area for the top quality beef from their own farm. It’s therefore a no-brainer for them to sell their beef, as well as lamb and pork from local producers, from the butchery in their Homer Hill farm shop. Alongside this you’ll also find a carefully chosen selection of products and gifts from unusual, local and artisan sources. Honey from South Durham Honey, craft beers from the Durham Brewery and cheese from Parlour Made are just a few of the local delights you can find.

Located on the main trans-Pennine route, this farm shop is popular with local residents and passing travellers alike, whether it’s a quick pit-stop on your journey, or even a weekly shop. Located on the outskirts of Penshaw village, this family-run farm shop is expanding year on year. Since opening, the butchery has earned itself a reputation for supplying quality produce – Aberdeen Angus beef and grass-fed lamb comes from their own farm in West Rainton, before being sold fresh or used to supply the tea room and bakery. In the savoury section think pies and sausage rolls, while on the other side you have the cream cake counter which covers all your sweet-tooth needs. The back wall is for freshly-baked bread, offering everything from sourdough to stotties.
