It's National Chocolate Week!

It’s the week we’ve all been waiting for: loosen the belt buckles, and get ready to enjoy the sweet life, because National Chocolate Week is here. There are lots of fine chocolatiers here, but we know time is precious – so here’s our pick of the best.

North East

The Chocolate Gallery
There’s a huge selection of hand-crafted, beautifully presented chocolates at this charming outpost in Morpeth – whether it’s good old milk chocolate or something a little bit different like a Pina Colada truffle, you won’t be disappointed.

The Good Tempered Chocolate Co
If you manage to catch these guys at Tynemouth Market or Jesmond Food Market, you’re in luck. Founder Zoe tempers all their chocolates by hand using fine Belgian couverture (chocolate made with extra cocoa butter to give a high gloss), and dreams up delicious combinations – think caramelised walnuts and candied oranges in silky 70% cocoa chocolate.

Davenport’s Chocolates
Davenport’s Chocolates are lovingly crafted by artisan chocolatier Jane Williams using the traditional Swiss method of enrobing, which results in a beautiful, velvety texture. Choose from a range of flavours including cinnamon toffee apple and strawberry champagne, which can even be delivered to your door if you’re feeling extra indulgent.

The Chocolate Smiths
If you’re after a chocolate bar with a difference, look no further. The Chocolate Smiths produce quirkily flavoured chocolates, such as smoky bacon and chocolate, and an equally curious combination of cheese and crackers.

Chocolate Fayre
Prepare to enter a chocoholic’s paradise – Chocolate Fayre next to Barnard Castle is packed full of intricately crafted chocolates with an abundance of flavours to choose from. You can even create a personalised chocolate box, making a perfect gift or an indulgent personal treat (the latter is our choice).

Chocolateeha
If you thought healthy chocolate was a distant daydream, think again. Northumbria University graduate Wajeeha Husain has created low-calorie, additive-free chocolate using single-origin cacao nibs from Madagascar and West Africa, meaning you can enjoy delicious chocolate without the guilt.

Choc Affair
This family-run business has an exceptional range of divine chocolate treats – for the kids, there’s brightly-coloured chocolate lollies, while for adults, bars of chocolate flecked with lime and sea salt await. You can try their chocolates at Living North’s Christmas Fair at York Racecourse (14th–17th November).

Kacao Chocolaterie
The founder of Kacao Chocolaterie in Richmond spent time in the cocoa-producing hubs of Southern America for years before setting up shop back in Yorkshire. Her inventive products, including hot chocolate stirrers and milk chocolate popping candy, are a real sweet treat which you can try for yourself at Living North’s Christmas Fairs at Newcastle’s Kingston Park (7th–10th November) and York Racecourse (14th–17th November).

Each piece is made using the finest Belgian chocolate and hand-finished to a stunning, realistic effect, with fantastic flavour to boot. You can try her amazing creations at Living North’s Christmas Fairs at Newcastle’s Kingston Park (7th–10th November) and York Racecourse (14th–17th November).

Coeur De Xocolat
Instead of just eating the chocolate, why not try your hand at making it? Award-winning chocolatier-for-hire David Greenwood-Haigh hosts specialist chocolate-making sessions, walking you through the history of chocolate before teaching you to make your very own artisanal bar.

And Chocolate of Haworth
There’s no end to the chocolatey indulgence here – caramel and sea salt encased in dark chocolate or their coffee and walnut truffles are a welcome change from the customary milk chocolate.

Guppy’s Chocolates
Fran and Peter Guppy began making chocolate in their garage in 2010 and, despite relocating to a shop on the outskirts of York, have stayed true to their humble beginnings, using the same simplistic recipe they did nine years ago to create beautiful, authentic-tasting chocolate. You can try them at Living North’s Christmas Fair at York Racecourse (14th–17th November).
