Looking for something new to read?

From a murder mystery to a dystopian coming-of-age novel, you’ll love these books by Yorkshire authors.

FIRES OF BRIGANTIA, Tina Zee

This is the story of Queen Cartimandua; a heroic woman in a world of warring men. When the Queen’s daughter falls in love with a rebel warrior, two worlds collide. Queen Cartimandua lived and reigned during the Roman invasion, but writer Tina Zee (a proud Yorkshirewoman) thinks the spirit of her people lives on in the people of Yorkshire today. This story explores how Cartimandua shaped beliefs, religion and traditions.

Fires of Brigantia is the first book in Tina’s Cartimandua trilogy, and available to order via Amazon now.

THE MYSTERY OF MELSHAM WOOD, Dave Gregson

The unidentified body of an apparent murder victim has been discovered within the darkness of Melsham Wood. It’s up to DCI Mowbray to solve this case, and to do that, he needs to delve into the innermost workings of the village community, exposing plenty of secrets. Only a short read, of less than 60 pages, why don’t you don your detective cap and see if you can figure out who the culprit is? Leeds author Dave had a late diagnosis of autism, and through his experiences, he has worked and campaigned for equality, inclusion and tackling prejudice. Known for his brilliant children’s books, this gripping new tale is something altogether different. We can’t wait to see what he writes next.

ALL ABOUT EVIE, Matson Taylor

In 1972 (10 years on from the events of The Miseducation of Evie Epworth – Matson’s first release) Evie is settled in London working for the BBC, a far cry from her home in East Yorkshire. She has everything she’s ever dreamed of but, following an unfortunate incident involving Princess Anne and a Hornsea Pottery mug, she finds herself having to rethink her life. Follow her adventures as she navigates her 20s in this uplifting read about the power of friendship in all its forms. Matson grew up in Yorkshire but now lives in London, just like Evie, but he often returns home for book signings in local bookshops including Chapter One Loftus.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF JAMES HERRIOT, Jim Wight, Rosie Page & James Herriot

We love this charming collection of classic stories from James Herriot’s much-loved books. Filled with insightful observations and plenty of humour, James captures the spirit of the Yorkshire Dales and rural communities on the cusp of change, with the animals at the heart of his stories. There’s never a dull moment and this selection of tales promise to be laugh-out-loud funny. James Herriot was the pen name of James Alfred ‘Alf’ Wight, whose tales of veterinary practice and country life in the Yorkshire Dales remain as popular as ever today. Rosie Page and Jim Wight are James’ children; Rosie became a doctor and Jim was a vet – and they wrote the introduction for this new release.

Published by Macmillan, available in all good bookshops now or online here.

TRION, C.B. Wilde

A young boy tries to save the city and his family with the only weapons he has – courage and imagination. Torn between his practical and militaristic father, and the eccentric views of his teacher Fidias, Zeth feels that he’s different to those around him. When Fidias reveals an alternative history,  Zeth’s entire world is turned upside down. Which version of events actually took place? This is a dystopian coming-of-age novel following diverse characters.

C.B. Wilde, who lives in North Yorkshire, is a former academic and teacher. He has published articles in academic journals on the history and philosophy of science. This is his debut novel inspired by drama lessons he gave during his teaching career.
