Our Guide to the Yorkshire Town of Otley
Cobbled streets and quaint shops all beside the River Wharfe
For a taste of Italy in Otley, head to Buon Apps – a delightful Italian positioned next to the River Wharfe. If you love a trendy coffee shop, Bloomfield Square is a charming little café run by former frontman of Terrorvision, Tony Wright. The fantastic brewery North Bar calls Otley its second home, with a stylish taproom on Gay Lane, North Bar social. If you’re a brunch lover, try Mr Blinkok Pancake House, serving sweet and savoury pancakes in an inventive array of combinations.
The Black Horse Hotel is set in the heart of Otley, perfect for getting to the shops and restaurants in a fl ash. Doubling up as a pub, The Black Horse also serves great locally-sourced food. For the full nine yards, Chevin Country Park Hotel & Spa is the UK’s largest log cabin, built from imported Swedish logs and positioned beside tranquil woodland.
Independent stores in Otley are everywhere, as well as fantastic experiences such as pottery painting at Puffin Pottery. Find fab brands at Harriets ladieswear, a unique handmade collection of baby and children’s wear at Peek a Boo, and there’s also Barber & Bennett – a brilliant independent wine and spirits shop.
Browns Gallery is the oldest established gallery in Otley, standing on the site of the alleged birthplace of Thomas Chippendale. It showcases some lovely original artwork and premium gifts. The Knotties Stone on Otley Chevin has some of the oldest prehistoric rock art in the county, and Otley Courthouse is a former police station and Magistrates Court, still retaining a prison cell and a history timeline. The courthouse’s modern day function is as a popular arts centre, featuring shows, talks, and films.
