There’s so much to do, but here’s our pick for the perfect weekend

Here’s how to make the most of your few days off.

Take a bite…

Sunday is International Beer and Pizza Day and – not that anyone needs one – it’s the perfect excuse to enjoy some pizza and a pint. Here’s our pick of cosy pubs to warm up in with a pint, or if you’d rather stay in to enjoy a cold one and a slice in front of the TV, at livingnorth.com we teach you how to make basic pizza dough as well as suggesting a great variety of toppings too. Not got a pizza oven? No problem – we even have a frying pan pizza recipe too.

Have a laugh…

Following a whirlwind couple of years (packed with awards and sell-out shows), Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nominee and Geordie lass Lauren Pattison is back with a new show at The Stand Comedy Club this Saturday. She’s reluctant to share too much of what it’s about, because if the last year has taught us anything it’s that life can change fast. This show ‘is what it is’ – and what we are sure of is that whatever it is, you won’t want to miss it.

Grab a stein…

There are Oktoberfests taking place all over Yorkshire this month, however few of them will be quite like Saturday’s Yorkshire Craft Beers event in Castleford. Who better to host this traditional autumnal festival than the experts in beer themselves? Guests can expect a selection of the best German beer, lager and food, as well as fun games of skill and stamina with prizes for the winners. Not forgetting of course the popular Oompah band.

Take some you-time…

It’s World Mental Health Day on Monday so use this weekend to take extra care of yourself. If, for you, that involves taking a therapeutic icy dip in the North Sea, we caught up with Whitby Wild Swimmer, Ally Brisby, to find out what you need to know about sea swimming here, plus where to do it in Yorkshire. Or perhaps you’re more of a warm Jacuzzi person? In which case, here are the best luxury spas to book. Whatever helps you relax and de-stress, just be sure to do something for you.

Ground yourself…

Feel grounded this weekend, as you’re invited to Om Yoga Works’ autumn yoga retreat at Beamsley Project church in Skipton. A three-day event, you will be treated to a number of Hatha classes and karma yoga, as well as having time for walking and exploring the surrounding area, connecting with other guests and enjoying nourishing food from Bilberry Bee catering. To find out why yoga is so beneficial head to livingnorth.com where we help you to understand what chakras are and how yoga can help balance them.

Look out of this world…

This week was World Space Week and what better way to celebrate than by looking up into space? No we’re not talking about simply daydreaming, we mean literally looking up at the dark skies above Kielder Observatory. They have a variety of events taking place this weekend, from an Aurora Night exploring the incredible Northern Lights to the Late Night Explorer where you’ll get to use telescopes and the observation deck. There’s even a special kids event called ‘Searching For Aliens’ so there’s something for the whole family.

Game play…

On Saturday afternoon, Newcastle go head to head with Brentford in their next match of the Premier League. Only a few places apart in the current table, it’s set to be a close match. In Yorkshire Huddersfield and Hull play on Sunday lunchtime, with a 12 o’clock kick off. Rugby fans should head to Kingston Park to see Newcastle Falcons take on Saracens on Sunday afternoon in what should be a thrilling game, especially following the Falcons’ fantastic win against top of the table Bristol Bears – a treat for all rugby fans – last Friday.

Keep smiling…

It’s World Smile Day on Friday and there are so many things to smile about at this time of year, from bright, crisp mornings to lots of leaf-kicking loveliness. You can give the people you love more reasons to smile by treating them to a meal at one of the great places on our ultimate foodie guide for the North East and Yorkshire. Or skip the smile and go straight for a belly laugh with one of these hilarious autobiographies..
