Northumberland-born LJ Ross is the bestselling author of the DCI Ryan murder mystery series. Each month, she shares an exclusive Book Club pick with Living North readers

This month’s LJ Ross Book Club selection is A. A. Chaudhuri’s psychological thriller, She’s Mine, which tells the tale of Christine, a mother of three children – one of whom was abducted from a shopping cart while she took a phone call. The resulting guilt seeps into her family life, leading her to neglect her remaining children and withdraw from her husband, while she maintains the obsessive hope that her daughter is still alive. She craves answers and then, one day, she receives a note telling her that all her dreams have come true...

LJ’s thoughts:

‘If you like dark characters and plenty of twists, this is the book for you. The style of writing works well to maintain a high level of tension and pace, with short, punchy chapters that invariably draw you in for “just one more, before bed...” Chaudhuri has managed that most difficult of things, when writing commercial fiction – she’s created unlikeable characters that manage to keep a reader enthralled, with their domestic fragility and seething undercurrents that generally leave the reader with an overall impression that they should “trust no-one”. If you’re somebody who enjoys an unnerving thriller on the darker side, this is certainly one for you!’
