Tucked inside the Grade II-listed arches of the Quays Hotel in Sheffield is the brand new Tavern on the Quays. Expect a range of international pub fare and tipples including Canadian poutine and Detroit deep-dish pizza, with a focus on sharing dishes. Designed with a distinctly steampunk look, we can’t wait to visit.

Nøt Bakery Co
Hidden inside Chapel Allerton’s Paria Café is the new micro bakery everyone is raving about. Nøt Bakery Co opened earlier this year with mouthwatering cinnamon knots, before experimenting with flavours such as lavender, apricot and frangipane. Head to Living North’s Christmas Fair at York Racecourse (20th–23rd November) for your chance to sample them in person.

Cult favourite breakfast spot Federal in Manchester is preparing to open its first Yorkshire outpost on Leeds’ Boar Lane. With its laidback vibe, its early-morning options are a cut above the rest; tuck into everything from lemon curd and almond porridge to cheddar corn fritters, steak and eggs, and homemade banana bread with mascarpone.

The owners of indie favourite Bench in Sheffield have announced a new venture that has everyone talking. Restaurant and bar Maria promises authentic Italian food in signature Bench style, with a healthy dose of nostalgia. Slowly transforming the culinary face of the city, Bench also have bakery and wine bar, Bench La Cave, and The Pearl at Park Hill.

Nina Matsunaga, chef-owner of the renowned Black Bull in Sedbergh, has launched a new restaurant concept, Tsuchi, influenced by her German and Japanese heritage. From the Japanese word for ‘earth’ the new concept will offer a tasting menu that combines local produce with international techniques

Oozing contemporary cool in calming neutral tones, Mae Café on Holgate Road in York recently welcomed its first guests. Perfect for an easy Sunday morning, expect breakfast staples alongside seasonal lunch options and drinks. Watch the world go by with a hot spiced apple tea, or tuck into a bowl of French onion soup.

With Soku Kitchen making magic on the menus, the newly opened Assemble on Old Eldon Square has become an instant hit. Warm, inviting and contemporary, the café-cum-wine bar has a pared-back menu of sharing plates and snacks. Think Szechuan squid, breaded pork chops with nectarine and dry aged beef with hispi cabbage. They change it up regularly so keep an eye on their socials.

Mr White’s
Coming to South Shields this autumn, Mr White’s is the newest venture from chef Marco Pierre White. The 50-cover restaurant will be above the popular Log Fire Pizza Co whose owners will be taking the helm. With a menu focused on excellent steak, seafood and cocktails, we can’t wait to visit.

Everyone’s favourite bakery has recently announced a brand new location set to open soon. With venues already in Gosforth, Newcastle and Jesmond, Pink Lane Bakery are now heading into Northumberland with a new spot in Morpeth. Expect an excellent selection of sweet and savoury bakes, hot drinks and food-to-go when doors open this autumn.

If you still can’t let go of summer, we know a new spot where you can find some Italian sunshine. Veeno in Durham recently welcomed its first guests to much excitement, bringing the authentic flavours of Italy to the city. There’s a great range of wines to choose from, and its location on the Riverwalk means it has excellent views.

The newest addition to Sheepfolds Stables is ideal for early birds. Mine (named after the area’s industrial heritage) is a charming café offering hearty breakfasts – think full English, bacon sandwiches, eggs done properly
and plenty of strong coffee.
