The latest basketball, football, horse racing and rugby union fixures this March

Que sera sera. So the year begins to roll and spring is on the horizon. That said, there's still a huge amount of football to be played and with the exception of the Pools, North East clubs are playing with passion with Sunderland's recent display at Fulham one to savour. Time will tell if the Black Cats can win out at home in the replay and reach the fifth round. Newcastle's early dismissal from the FA Cup has been more than made up for by their first appearance at Wembley this century - happy days! Meanwhile in the Championship, Middlesbrough are playing some really outstanding football, their only recent blip being against Sunderland. The eroded rugby season has seen some top class performances from the Falcons too, and national hunt racing enters its golden hour.

BASKET BALL

The frustrating season continues for Newcastle’s basketball team The Eagles and with only one team beneath them in the table, things are looking pretty grim. There’s never been a better time to get behind our local team, so get yourselves down to Scotswood Road.

RUGBY UNION

The Falcons at home have been terrific to watch this winter; guts, talent and real pace have combined to make them a really first-class outfit. With the demise of two teams this year the season’s fixtures have been reduced but, if you can, try and get along to their remaining home games for a really fun atmosphere – it takes some beating. These are two to make a note of.

HORSE RACING

You can sense that spring is in the air as racing comes out of its winter slumber (except at Gosforth Park where the all-weather track keeps the sport going constantly). There’s some terrific jumping across the country and the flat racing season also begins in earnest in March. Here are a few dates to put in your diary.
