Northern Ballet's Cinderella is Every Little Girl's Dream Dance
We go to the ball as Northern Ballet's Cinderella enchants Newcastle Theatre Royal
Originally choreographed by Michael Pink for Milwaukee Ballet, this feel-good ballet brings all the beauty you expect from a Northern Ballet production, with humorous moments throughout.
From the very beginning, we fall in love with the stunning set and beautiful costumes, which are particularly dazzling in the ethereal magic scene and the grand ball.
While the whole point is of course to root for Cinderella’s happily ever after (and we do), our favourite characters are a surprising pair. The Stepsisters (who are played by male dancers performing in drag in this production) are so funny, and whenever they appear you can’t help but divert your attention to see what they’re going to do next. They bring chaos to every scene, and it’s a real art for talented dancers to ‘dance badly’ deliberately.
Cinderella’s prince is as charming as you would expect, and her only friend, Jack, is equally charming but endearingly cheeky – his fun and purposefully messy performance makes his character shine. Cinderella herself dances with ease and makes every move look effortless.
We love the use of set and space and it’s all made even more special by Prokofiev’s classic music being played live, something which is becoming more and more rare in theatres these days.
Magical from start to finish, this is every little girl’s dream fairytale production.
