Bamburgh Walled Garden Café

With an enclosed playground overlooked by a light-filled café with floor-to-ceiling windows, this is an excellent option for young families. Let the kids blow off steam while you relax with a coffee and a slice of homemade cake.

Ethos

This motor-themed coffee shop, bar and retail space in Amble is a real hidden gem, and it’s only a stone’s throw from the sea. Beginning as a great spot for coffee, Ethos has now expanded to include sessions from local musicians, a Sunday breakfast club and car meets for motor enthusiasts.

Spurreli

This spot is best known for its award-winning ice cream, but there’s plenty to enjoy besides. Enjoy your hot drink inside, on their outside seating, or take it away for a stroll along the beach.

Rustic Cup

Despite its prominent spot on Park View, we feel Rustic Cup flies under the radar locally. Coffee here is taken very seriously, and a recent revamp of the interiors means the space is bathed in natural light with plenty of leafy greenery. The bakery counter is fantastic and there’s a healthy range of contemporary brunch options.

Laneway & Co

Laneway’s second and newest location in the North East places it at the heart of the action in Tynemouth, taking up the former residence of Toast. Though it has a decidedly more retro vibe than its Newcastle-based counterpart, you can still expect excellent coffee and delicious breakfast and lunch options.

The Lookout

As the name might suggest, the views from this café are unmatched, particularly from the outside seating area. While away the hours by the water with a hot drink and something homemade and delicious, like their fresh scones and breakfast rolls.

Elephant Rock

This is a welcome new addition to Roker’s seafront, bringing beachy vibes and seasonal treats. Besides hot drinks, they’ve also got a good variety of cocktails, and the space is dog friendly too.

Lyla’s Coffee Shop and Kitchen

This is a firm favourite in Hartlepool and is totally Instagrammable. Their interiors are supremely relaxed and there’s always something new to enjoy on the specials menu, whether you’re stopping by for a hot drink or a light bite.
