Seeking an alternative to typical café society, Newcastle's newest coffee supplier Daily Pour offers excellent brews, chill vibes and great music

If, like us, you're tired of your morning coffee routine and are looking to inject some fun vibes, then Daily Pour is for you. Set up by Jack Fenwick to make good coffee fun and accessible, his coffee has now found a home in pop-ups throughout the city, blending high quality beans with curated playlists for customers.

‘I’ve always been into [coffee] but the kind of snobbery that surrounds it put me off ever pursuing it,’ Jack says. ‘And then during Covid the access to high-quality coffee was few and far between.’

Nothing could come between Jack and a proper cup of coffee, and so he took it upon himself to find his own, managing to find a local supplier who was roasting high-quality beans. ‘He had access to good coffee and was able to get me some to start my own label with,’ Jack explains. ‘So I started roasting in tandem with him.’

An idea began to form for a business that turned classic coffee on its head. ‘That’s where the music element to the brand comes in,’ Jack explains. ‘I spoke to Mul, the graphic artist who has graffiti all over the city, and he designed our logo and packaging. He has ties to club music and I thought that would be cool.’

Daily Pour’s pop-up events began in venues where music was a central focus. ‘At the start of the year we did an event with Minor Figures (the oat milk company), at Hidden Heights Creative Studio in Gateshead,’ Jack says. ‘They had a full DJ set going on in there and it had a daytime, chill vibe.’ For Jack, it wasn’t just about taking coffee out of it’s usual habitat, but music too. ‘[We wanted to] get away from music only being for clubs and drinking.’

‘Central to the whole business is the local community which supports it’

Since that first event, Daily Pour has found a home inside Ooze, Ouseburn’s ultra-hip and ultra-local modern convenience store, with future plans for similar events in the city. As well as pop-up events, the music is woven into the bags of coffee themselves (almost literally). ‘On each of the packets we have a QR code that links to a Spotify playlist that we update constantly – it’s another way of weaving music in there, and linking it as much as we can.’ And what is on this master playlist? ‘It’s sort of chill, house music. There are some more upbeat songs, but generally speaking it’s disco house music.’

Jack’s interest in coffee inspired him to expand the range. ‘Ironically, I am attracted to the thing I’m trying to get away from – the complexity of the flavours is really interesting to me. I like good coffee and I like to experiment with things like different brew methods which is why we’re going down the cold brew method in the future. The different flavour profiles you can get out of it are really interesting but I just think that the way it’s communicated is terrible for the most part, until a brand comes along and makes it a bit more accessible.’

Soon we can expect a Daily Pour cold brew. ‘As we go down the canned coffee route, the perfect idea would be to get it into low-level festivals and offer it as an alternative to alcohol. The cans themselves are designed to look like IPA beer cans but filled with coffee. It means that people don’t have to feel self-conscious about holding something that isn’t alcohol.’

Something of a bean-nerd, Jack takes his roast seriously. ‘We’ve got two beans. One is from Colombia and one from El Salvador. El Salvador is what we’d describe as a funky and sweet bean so it’s called ‘disco bean’ for that reason. It’s got a very fruity aroma,’ he continues. ‘The Colombian one is like an every-day coffee and it’s a milder, more subtle bean; something you can rely on during the week.’

Central to the whole business is the local community which supports it, and the response to Daily Pour has been overwhelmingly positive. ‘We’ve had a really good reaction to it,’ Jack says. ‘We’ve hit a bit of a spot where people are looking for coffee out walking their dogs on a Sunday. We’ve got regulars as a result because it’s one of the only places in the local area.’

QUICK-FIRE QUESTIONS

What’s your go-to coffee order?

If I go out, probably a cortado which is effectively a smaller flat white. A flat white has a little bit more milk in.

Tell us a great local spot for coffee.

Laneway is always good because it’s quite near, and Lagom is probably my favourite.

Which musicians are you listening to right now?

Weirdly I’m on a real country music vibe so Zach Bryan. Other than that Jamie XX.
