Plan your perfect picnic

Picnics are firmly back in fashion, and there’s not a soggy sandwich in sight. Here’s where to get everything you need to take your picnic to the next level.

The Whitby Deli

The Whitby Deli offer a variety of indulgent hampers, including grab-and-go picnic hampers. Available for two or four people, they can include roast Yorkshire ham, Snowdonia Black Bomber cheddar and pots of olives, alongside a range of sweet and savoury treats. Pimp your hamper with Prosecco for an extra £10, or call the deli and let the experts help you create your perfect bespoke picnic.

Campbell’s of Leyburn

A family-owned supermarket is a rarity these days – and particularly one as good as Campbell’s. The shelves at this award-winning store are packed with artisan and specialist produce, their butchers source local and rare-breed meat, and their deli and cheese counters are a sight to behold, with everything from relishes and pickles to olives, tapas, salamis and pies. Don’t leave without visiting their extensive wine department on the first floor.

Farm Shop at Cranswick

The Farm Shop at Cranswick’s deli counter has everything you need for a cracking picnic, from regional, British and continental cheeses to olives, stuffed peppers, home-cooked meats and traditional pork pies. If you want to make life easy for yourself, their hot and cold takeaway sandwiches are made to order and filled to suit your tastes.

The Greengrocer of Acomb

This independent greengrocer is renowned for its friendly service and its quality produce. Pick up fresh fruit and veg (including gorgeous heritage tomatoes), Yorkshire cheeses and Bluebird Bakery bread (their parmesan and red onion sourdough is our choice), as well as products made in house, including Scotch eggs, pastries and brownies.

Graze & Gorge

Think boxes brimming with cheeses, meats, crackers, fruit, chutneys, and a myriad of sweet treats are too OTT for a picnic? Think again. The experts at Graze & Gorge are delivering luxury platter boxes – filled with everything from antipasti, charcuterie and award-winning cheeses, to their famed chocolate bark and bliss balls, and their own take on afternoon tea – direct to your door every weekend. We’re sold.

Scott’s of Alnmouth

You’ll find all of the picnic essentials, including the more indulgent variety, at this this well-stocked deli in the coastal village of Alnmouth. We think their Scott’s Boxes are a go-to – packed, wrapped and ready to go for collection or delivery. Try The Best of Northumberland Box – filled with local kippers or smoked salmon, a selection of local cheeses, Northumberland shortbread, Chainbridge honey, Pilgrims coffee, North Chocolate and Lady Waterford marmalade – or the Antipasti Box for the flavours of Europe – we’d suggest picking up a bottle of red from the deli to go alongside the latter.

Black’s Corner

This deli, wine specialist and bakehouse stock small batch cheese, artisan breads and accompanying wines and chutneys, crackers and beers – basically everything one could need for an artisan spread in the park. Their Picnic Packs, which are available for collection from their East Boldon-based deli, are full to the brim with the best items from local producers. Plus, their team will be on hand to advise on a wine that will perfectly pair with your feast.

Heather and Bale

Heather and Bale take the hassle out of picnics by packing their hampers to the brim with little luxuries made by local producers. Their Harley Picnic Hamper is a modern take on the traditional picnic basket, packed with sweet and savoury treats – including North Chocolate’s smoked salt milk bar and the Northumberland Cheese Company’s nettle cheddar. Their Middleton Picnic hamper takes things up a notch with English sparkling wine, Fentiman’s sparkling elderflower, pâté, crispbreads, nuts and crisps to savour, and a Luxury box of Davenport Truffles.
