Planning your wedding this year? Want to go outdoors? Here are eight tips for you to make the day go off without a hitch

Top 8 tips for outdoor events

1. The little things matter

Consider the practicalities of your event: measure up the event space you want to place a canopy on, and scope out the nearest power source.

2. Be nice to neighbours

Be aware of your surroundings, particularly if you’re anywhere near built up areas. Live music requires a certain licence, sometimes supplied by a venue.

3. Make sure they do ‘I do’s'

Bear in mind that wedding licensing is incredibly strict in the UK: permanent structures that meet a tangled web of rules are eligible wedding venues, so your reception only is likely to be possible under cover.

4. Bins and water

Everyday items that are commonplace at indoor events – like rubbish bins or running water – aren’t a given outdoors, so make preparations.

5. Look up

Your tent’s ceiling is likely to be barer and plainer than indoor room ceilings, so make sure to decorate them with bunting, pom-poms or other hanging decorations.

6. Climate change

The interior climate of the venue is likely to change more dramatically than an indoor wedding. If you’re hosting a winter wedding, bring space heaters; if it’s summer, pack fans.

7. Provide footwear...

Make sure to have a basket of flip-flops (or something more substantial if it’s likely to rain) for guests to wear on their way to the tent.

8. ...and lights

Guests will be leaving in the small hours when it’s dark, so make sure you light the way to their cars home to save them traipsing blind through a field.
