Sip, sip, hooray it's World Cocktail Day (on 13th May)

From classic flavours to fruity and fun creations, here's where to celebrate.
Alexander’s

Alexander’s
Skipton’s award-winning grand café, bar and terrace is a great place to spend World Cocktail Day. From Alexander’s signature cocktails and fizz to craft beers and gins, there’s plenty of choice here. Take a seat outside on the terrace or in the secret garden and soak up the sun as you sip on the Cherry Blossom, the Pretty in Pink or Alexander’s Royale cocktails. For those not drinking but still wanting to enjoy something refreshing, there are plenty of mocktails, with our personal favourite being the Sacha Summer.

GEO
Overlooking Scarborough’s harbour, GEO is a 1920s Art-Deco bar and kitchen with a modern twist. Once Bethel Mission chapel, the bar now offers city vibes by the seaside, combining luxurious interiors with delicious cocktails which have been crafted by their team of expert mixologists. As well as seasonal cocktails, find GEO’s signature creations with nods towards the county, including a Brontë Bramble, a Scarborough Sling and a Yorkshire Royal on the menu.

The Lexington Rooftop Bar
When the sun is shining there’s nowhere better to drink cocktails than The Lexington Rooftop Bar in the heart of Hull, and when the sun goes down, the outdoor heaters mean you can linger a little longer. We’ve got our eyes on the Clover Club made with gin, Chamberzette, lemon and strawberry syrup, and the Smoke on the Water which combines mezcal with beetroot, blackberry, lemon and agave syrup.

Forage

Forage
This neighbourhood restaurant and late-night bar, just a few streets away from York’s iconic Shambles, focuses on locally-sourced and foraged ingredients. For a twist on a classic, we recommend the Blackforest Fizz with a gin and Prosecco base, or for the real Forage experience, try the Wild Negroni served on a smoking board of moss. Looking for your own oasis? Head upstairs and through the bookcase to find the secret garden bar, Wild by Forage, for an intimate drinking space serving the same mesmerising cocktails.

SPARK: York
Boho Mixologists at SPARK:York have recently released their new spring menu and it’s not to be missed. Working with top local distillers including award-winning gin distillers Cooper King and more recently established liquor specialists Ellers Farm, and using herbs from GrowItYork (based just 15 metres from their bar), the team ensure sustainability is at the forefront of their efforts. We recommend their Elderflower and Rose Spritz on a sunny day.

Head to any of their restaurants and bars (in York, Harrogate or Beverley) and explore the extensive drinks menu. As well as premium spirits, wines, craft beers and mocktails, they serve classic cocktails and their own signature creations here. The Summer Sling is perfect when the sun is shining, or try one of their Yorkshire-inspired cocktails such as the Yorkshire Rose or Paradise in Yorkshire.

Born from the love of their home town in Sardinia, owners of Sheffield’s latest sky lounge and cocktail bar, Kelu, offer a Mediterranean-style paradise to soak up the sun whilst enjoying cleverly crafted cocktails and nibbles. The cocktail menu features mixes from near and far and includes all the classics such as daiquiris, martinis and cosmopolitans, as well as mocktails and Kelu signature creations. Looking for the perfect sunshine drink? We recommend the Keluver Club – with gin, Galliano l’aperitivo, rhubarb, cardamom and strawberry cordial, aquafaba and citrus.

Bacchus Wine and Cocktail Bar
Carefully-crafted cocktails created by their in-house mixologists, alongside delicious gin and tonics, craft beers and more than 40 wines by the glass, Bacchus has something for everyone. Choose from one of the classics with a twist (think mint chocolate espresso martinis and chocolate orange negronis) or try a Bacchus creation such as the Abeja Cooler made with honey tequila, lemon juice, apricot liqueur and lemonade.

The Lost & Found
With two outposts in Leeds and a secret wild garden in the heart of Sheffield, The Lost & Found have made a name for themselves with their inventive cocktails. If you’re in the mood to share, the icy illusion Tangled Teapot for two is good fun, and there are also the likes of a Popcorn Old Fashioned, Lychee Martini and The Waterhouse Spritz on the menu.

Below Stairs

Below Stairs
This hidden gem in the heart of Leeds serves house-crafted cocktails which aim to wow your senses. Order one of the classics or ask the bartenders to shake up something special – we love the sound of the adventurous Happy Accident made with Herradura tequila, beetroot, honey and chocolate bitters. There are also plenty of low- and non-alcoholic cocktails, and wines and craft beers on the menu.

Public
In the former gent’s toilets below the Grade I-listed Victorian town hall in Sheffield, you’ll find this cosy bar serving creative cocktails. With dark and moody interiors, Public is the place to go in Sheffield – don’t just take our word for it, they were named in the UK’s Top 50 Cocktail Bars earlier this year. Tethered to their city and seasonality, expect drinks which push the boundaries and to help you choose, their menu is categorised into sustainable sipping, drinks with a nod to vacations, aperitivos and delicious mocktails.

Macy Brown’s
Serving cool cocktails by the sea, Macy Brown’s is a go-to in Whitby. With an extensive cocktail menu which includes gin, rum, tequila and vodka-based drinks, try the Whitby Sunrise made with amaretto, gin, coconut purée, orange juice, pineapple purée and grenadine, for something fruity and refreshing.

The Furnace

The Furnace
The Furnace is a city bar and outdoor terrace where you can relax and sip on cocktails whilst watching the sun go down, or listening to live music. Their cocktail menu is split into sections, including cooling, warming, transformative, spark, fuel and ignite creations. Our go-to is the Watermelon Dreams made with gin, elderflower liqueur, rose vermouth and watermelon syrup, although the Mardy Rum Punch (a dark rum base with banana liqueur, blood orange and pineapple juice) sounds right up our street too.

Roland’s
This laid-back bar is the perfect place to celebrate World Cocktail Day. If the weather is fine, take a seat in the courtyard or escape the hustle and bustle of the city on the hidden roof terrace to enjoy a chilled refresher in the sun. As well as some of the classics (including espresso martinis, cosmopolitans and bloody marys), Roland’s serve their own creations such as their Pisco Sour – think Barsol Quebranta pisco, elderflower liqueur, champagne syrup, citrus and bitters.
