With summer’s heathy glow a thing of the past, now we look to a new foundation to give us a flawless finish

Here are the best of the new ones to lay your hands on, plus top tips on how to get the best base every time.

Laying the foundation...

The first essential step is to choose the finish. Do you want flawless, or matte, and do you need full coverage or just a hint of a tint? Also consider whether your skin is dry, normal or oily, or a mix of all three. A good foundation will be different for everyone.

The key to good makeup is a good skincare routine. Regular exfoliation will get rid of dry, flaky patches and a good toner and serum will make sure your foundation can glide on easily, and stay there.

For glowy skin, mix your favourite foundation with a small amount of your go-to hydrating oil or serum. Rather than making your base slide off, the oil will give your skin an extra glow and over winter it will help keep your skin hydrated too. Alternatively press the oil lightly into skin once you’ve finished applying your foundation for the same result.

Hate not having a tan? Simply add a few tanning drops to your base and blend, blend, blend for a healthy, non-patchy, post-summer glow.

If your skin looks a little dull (a by product of colder weather in the North East) one easy trick is to add a few drops of highlighter to your foundation and mix on the back of your hand before applying. It will help illuminate your skin and give a subtle, brighter and fresher finish.

Don’t think you need to apply your foundation all over. Work outwards from the centre but only apply it where you feel you need coverage and blend carefully to avoid it looking patchy. Always blend even more carefully around the jawline so you don’t get a tide line where your jaw meets your neck.
