As well as Italian sides such as arancini and sharing platters, we recommend the wood-fired Autunno pizza – a creme di zucca base, topped with provolone and scamorza cheeses, garlic, wood-fired mushrooms and finished with 24-month-aged parmesan.

Flint
This cosy pizzeria on Heaton’s bustling Chillingham Road is so popular you need to book early to bag a seat, but they do takeaways too. Creating delicious Neapolitan pizza, as well as serving charcuterie, small plates and natural wine, it’s another of Heaton’s real treasures. We love the portobello pizza topped with hand-crushed tomatoes, Fior di Latte, portobello mushrooms, fresh basil, garlic oil and parmesan.

Scream For Pizza
The Scream For Pizza journey started back in 2014 when founders Victoria and Alex left their jobs and headed to Naples to pursue their passion for pizza. After training at Enzo Coccia’s celebrated La Notizia restaurant, the pair came back to the North East and took to the streets in their converted pizza van. Now Scream have their own restaurant in Sandyford where they create exceptional wood-fired pizzas. They also have a second venue on Newcastle Quayside where you can grab a slice to go.

Formerly Eleven, the team at Bawn have transformed their Ponteland hub into a plates, pizza and wine restaurant. The menu is filled with seasonal small plates and New York-style sourdough pizza and the dishes change depending on the best ingredients available – think pizza topped with ricotta cream, courgettes, spenwood cheese and salsa verde. On the Northumberland coast, near Embleton, you’ll find this small converted shipping container slinging tasty pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven. Wild Fire Pizza

This Heaton hotspot specialises in mouth-watering sourdough pizza made with expertly-sourced ingredients. The sourdough is aged for 72 hours and hand-stretched before Punto’s signature pizza sauce and carefully selected toppings are added. Pizzas are then cooked in their Gozney wood-fired oven.
