Eat and Drink
February 2022
Reading time 4 Minutes

National Pizza Day falls on 9th February, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by visiting our favourite independent pizzerias for a delicious slice or two

Here’s our pick of the best pizza places across the North East and Yorkshire.
Scream for Pizza Scream for Pizza
Rudy's Rudy's

Scream For Pizza
After training in Naples at the famous La Notizia Restaurant, Alex and Victoria pledged to return home to create mouthwatering pizza worth shouting (or screaming) about. Seven years later and the team are still creating exceptional wood-fired pizzas which the North East can’t get enough of – they’ve even opened their second venue on Newcastle’s Quayside where pizza lovers can order a slice followed by an artisan ice cream.
Our pick: The Brooklyn Bee – San Marzano tomato sauce, fior di latte, pecorino, spianta salami, pepperoni, basil and chilli honey drizzle.

Rudy’s
At this relaxed neighbourhood pizzeria, enjoy slices of delicious pizza which follow the traditional artistry of Naples. With restaurants in other major cities too, the team at Rudy’s know how to create pizza properly. From traditional Margherita, to toppings including wild boar salame, roquito peppers and roasted aubergine, there is something for everyone.
Our pick: Porchetta – a white pizza topped with roast porchetta, sage roasted potatoes, smoked mozzarella, caramelised onions and rosemary oil.

Pizza Social
Found in the heart of Harrogate, serving freshly made pizzas using their 20-year-old sourdough recipe, Pizza Social is the perfect place to visit on National Pizza Day. Their long fermentation process creates a light, thin and chewy base, whilst mozzarella and fresh tomatoes imported from Italy are combined with locally-sourced toppings for the perfect slice.
Our pick: Truffle Shuffle – Tomato, mozzarella, balsamic onions, mushrooms, rocket and truffle oil. Pizza Social also make a pizza of the week so make sure to ask the staff what’s on the specials menu.

Wild Fire Pizza
Born in lockdown in 2020, Wild Fire Pizza has become a popular choice amongst the locals of Sunderland and has now found permanent residency at The Ship Isis. The light, hand-stretched dough is topped with fresh ingredients including some from local suppliers Block and Bottle and Kaltur.
Our pick: The Blueprint – San Marzano, fresh garlic, garlic oil and fresh oregano. Top with parmesan, anchovy fillets or chestnut mushrooms for a small added cost.
